doclloyd
Figures! I just ordered a HD3 (with native MP3 playback) off a guy from ebay... oh well. The HD3 had color choices and a blue backlit screen (or white on the silver I think?). I'm looking forward to adding it to my portable music setup. Of course, this thread may not belong in the Hi-MD forum.... :-D

Damage
One caveat: all known HD1 upgrades thus far is send back to your local Sony Center to have it flashed for mere $20 (local currency equiv.) This could be just a space holder to announce that. Stay tuned.
red xiv
i know this isn't really in keeping with the firmware update, but i had a look at my friends MZ-NH1 the other day, and of particular interest to me was the usb connection cable. the cable offers connectivity to a pc and power supply (as far as i know), whilst my NW-HD1 needs to be placed in a usb cradle for both.i had a good look at the cable and port on the player, and it looked identical to the port on my nw-hd1, and the plug built into the cradle.has anybody tried the mznh1 cable on the nwhd1, or heard anything about this?if not, do you think it's likely to work, or am i venturing into dangerous territory? Christopher
Welcome, red xiv.The cables can be used with either device, but you will not gain any new abilities for your HD1 with it.
peare
Welcome, red xiv.The cables can be used with either device, but you will not gain any new abilities for your HD1 with it.←Kurisu, I will diagree on that, though you can use nh1's USB cable with hd1 (it fits) hd1 will ask for AC power adapter. Since it uses the only 1 place for connection it is unusable without power adapter. I bought this hd1 in september and hated it the moment I bought it. I wasnt able to wait for more for mz-nh1 and had bought that one. I am glad that I got a city protection plan. I will get rid of it soon. Since I dont live in the US I will have to wait until May to replace it with somethin else at Circuit City. What is the use of a HD player if you cant hook it directly to your PC? SONY is an idiot... but I love MD. Being using all kinds of it since 1996.
tripleeye49
Sony will be coming out with the native mp3 NW-HD3 players soon.http://news.sel.sony.com/pressrelease/5484
Leland
Nice find Ryzir. Hey, Nismo96! My post was over 12 hours earlier with the same link! Some respect here!
doclloyd
Something I've found with my HD3 (and its funky little adapter to plug in AC and USB - all in lieu of a cradle) is that the player will work with the computer if it's charged... the screen keeps saying to plug in an AC adapter, but it keeps working anyway. Who knows. Leland, are you going to go ahead and get your HD1 upgraded? I know you already had most of your library in ATRAC3/3+ format due to your use of MD... to date, I've only added a few tracks to my HD3 in MP3 format. Most of my stuff was setup for MD and I don't really keep any mp3's on my home PC. Just curious.
MZ-NH1
Any one hear anything about Sony going to upgrade the Hi-MD's so that they can play native .mp3's? :S
Leland
Yes, doc, I will upgrade it, just because I can. I suppose if it is somehow complicated and difficult to do so, like sending it to a service center or something, I will have to think twice. I do have MP3 content now from various sources but really don't mind converting it to ATRAC really. The biggest limitation of being mostly ATRAC is that my opportunities for switching suppliers is nil. I tried an HD3 at the store the other day and the menus did change much faster than the HD1. I am wondering if that could be a) newer firmware and an update might improve my HD1 or the fact that my HD1 is loaded to the gills with tunes (19Gigs full) while the display model HD3 had few.I would like to know if the little USB adapter/charger would work on the HD1. That would be convenient for travelling rather than taking the cradle, although the cradle is not so big to toss in my suitcase.

I think there will be a chip replacement too. I dont think firmware upgrade will let us use our hd1 without craddle, maybe only mp3 support. I would like my hd1 to be charged via USB like hd3, and it may need some physical changes, not only software.
Embador
Hello group,I still wonder if the USB-cable supplied with the NW-HD3 will work just for data transfer on my NW-HD1. I am quite sure that the recharge functionality will not work, but for transferring music it might?Has anyone here already tested it?Thank you for your help!EmbadorPS. I was considering getting an additional cradle, but it is about $130 delivered directly from Sony as spare part...
