There's a good reason for doing it this way: hopefully no users can get ahold of the firmware to hack it in any way.

It's all about control. It's also about making sure that the upgrade is done properly; if something goes wrong when one of their techs is doing the job, they're more likely to be able to fix it than the average user who barely knows how to plug a USB device in.

I'm betting the firmware on the HD1 is probably some esoteric ROM based chip; they probably have to replace a chip, or use a special program to upgrade it.

And what about charging over USB, without using the craddle? It says nothing on that. Will we be able to use it without the craddle?

just hd1. they're going to continue to sell the hd1 here for a while & all new units sold come with the firmware allready installed. the hd2 wont come to australia & the hd3 will be 6-12 months.

"The cost of the upgrade is $20.00 (includes labor, handling, tax, and return shipping). A Connect Cash™ code worth 25 downloads from the Connect™ music store (ARV $24.75) will be included upon return of your upgraded NW-HD1 unit"

"SonicStage software Ver 2.3 (or higher) is required for transferring MP3 files directly to the NW-HD1 unit. A CD-ROM containing SonicStage software Ver 2.3 will be provided with your upgraded unit."

The $20 doesn't seem too much considering the shipping is included. If you're into connect, sony even gives you more than what you paid for the upgrade in connect vouchers.
