Ryzir
Yes, it is finally here. Downside-> You have to send it to Sony for them to install the firmware and it costs $20. Way to go Sony make an awesome idea and screw it up.NW-HD1 mp3 firmware Edited February 11, 2005 by Ryzir
doclloyd
Looks like it's being handled just like it was in Japan and the UK/Europe. Seems odd they didn't create the HD1 to be firmware upgradable over USB, like the Vaio Pocket or iPod and other HDD players... hopefully the HD3 will be upgradable by the user to add new functionality. dex Otaku
There's a good reason for doing it this way: hopefully no users can get ahold of the firmware to hack it in any way. It's all about control. It's also about making sure that the upgrade is done properly; if something goes wrong when one of their techs is doing the job, they're more likely to be able to fix it than the average user who barely knows how to plug a USB device in. aeriyn
I'm betting the firmware on the HD1 is probably some esoteric ROM based chip; they probably have to replace a chip, or use a special program to upgrade it.
atrain
sony centre in melbourne told me it's free in australia. i was a little stunned, sony doing something for free? openMG 1.5 cost $50au if you needed a copy...

It says nothing on that. Will we be able to use it without the craddle?
MZ-NH1
atrain, did they say anything about the MZ-NH1, or those models being able to be firmware upgraded?

me
"The cost of the upgrade is $20.00 (includes labor, handling, tax, and return shipping). A Connect Cash™ code worth 25 downloads from the Connect™ music store (ARV $24.75) will be included upon return of your upgraded NW-HD1 unit""SonicStage software Ver 2.3 (or higher) is required for transferring MP3 files directly to the NW-HD1 unit. A CD-ROM containing SonicStage software Ver 2.3 will be provided with your upgraded unit."The $20 doesn't seem too much considering the shipping is included. If you're into connect, sony even gives you more than what you paid for the upgrade in connect vouchers.
