Guest graphis_7
nice to talk to you all. i am looking for minidisc player for the best of my buck. i don't really care about the capacity between hi-md and normal md, but i do want the most amazing sound possible to come out of my md player. now i am wondering if i should go for sharp's auvi line up (ds77, ds70, ds55, ds80) or sony's eh1. i hear people are 100% satified with sharp's 1 bit amp, but sony still have a petty normal amp(right?). are there any noticeable between sharp's 1 bit amp on ds70 when comparing to the ds77's 1 bit H.I. amp? thanks
Fat Tires
All those are playback only units. Do you have a minidisc recorder available already? You are going to need some way to get music onto minidiscs for use with any of those units. As far as Sharp vs. Sony goes, I owned a Sharp unit for some time, but never owned a Sony with the HD Digital Amp. I found that the EQ on the Sony, pair with nice headphones was just as good as anything I could get from the Sharp with similar EQ settings and headphone combinations. If I were going to buy a playback only unit today I'd go for the Sony EH930 since it has the HD Digital Amp and has the possibility for using HiMD media in the future while still being backwards compatible with current SP or LP2/LP4 recordings. bland10000
information on the Sharp models you mentioned: (ds77*, ds70, ds55, ds80*) *there isn't a ds77 or ds80 but in the current releases there is a dr77 and dr80IM-DR80 is a net md recorder/player. You can download music to your player via a usb connection. If you want to make an optical or rca cable recording, your optical cable and rca cable will plug into the cradle of the dr80 rather than into the dr80 itself.IM-DR77 is a recorder but not a net md recorder; you cannot download music to your player via usb connection. It does have a mic in/analog in/optical in terminals on the unit.DS77 (wavy surface) and DS55 (flat surface) are the same internal units just different casings*. They are player only units.* info on internals being the same Edited March 13, 2005 by bland10000
Mikami
I agree with bland10000 he speaks the truth. If you do not care about being about to upload to PC, or the amount of space you can hold on a Hi-MD, then there is no reason to go with Sony. However HI-MD does offer PCM sound and that is good. Here are those models bland10000 told you about:This is the Sharp non-net MD recorder:http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sharp_MD-DR77.htmlThis is the Sharp Net-Recorder:http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sharp_IM-DR580+DR80.html You really can not go wrong with those units the sound is great the only thing with better sound is Sony HI-MD in PCM mode, however that may also be disagreed with. Good luck, Mikami
Guest graphis_7
now, i am left with either the kenwood s55 or the ds70, i think the dr80 is too expensive unless i can found it on ebay(very rare).now, i know both s55 and ds70 have 1 bit amp, but which one is better? the kenwood one still accept 4 pole headphones, right? thanks
atrain
just to confirm - neither of those players record minidisc. you do have a recordable or netmd to match them with, right?s55, ds70 have no recording parts.for me the answer to the question would have been a sony rh910 out in the next few months, not a now 3 generations old sharp dr80
bland10000
the Kenwoods will accept 4-pole 'phones when plugged directly into the unit. If you use the remote, the signal will be converted for using 3-pole 'phones. Edited March 19, 2005 by bland10000

bland10000
yes, the remotes for the Sharp units are 4-pole in and 4-pole out. Also, with the Sharp remotes, you can use 3-pole 'phones without any problem.
