Hi, I'll try to answer your questions but this is my first MD & I'm not familiar with the terminology yet (esp. since I don't yet have a manual I can read).

I only have Hi-MD discs. Do you need regular MD discs to work in MD mode? There's an option in the menus for "disc mode." If I select "MD," it seems to accept my answer, but the display always shows "Hi-MD" in the top-left corner. So I think it's still in Hi-MD mode. There doesn't seem to be an option to format the discs in MD mode in Sonicstage either.

In the "record mode" menu, I can choose "PCM," "Hi-SP" or "Hi-LP."

I reckon this was some kind of strategy to give meaning for 1st gen HiMD devices (sort of inbetween models).

well that`s me not buying second gen.

this means that any thing i record on the second gen machines is NOT compatable with ANY minidisc device i have, bar Hi-MD capable devices?

Yes, they can play back any discs. Let me make sure you guys aren't spouting misinformation.

Second generation can record in ANY ATRAC3/plus flavor, including the old ATRAC3 bitrates, but only in Hi-MD mode - meaning that it cannot record discs compatible with older MD-only equipment. This is what first generation Hi-MD was for.

And of course it's Minidisc, but just an evolution.

If all these rumors are true, the only thing better about the 2nd generation is the design?!?!

(Yes I do know native mp3 support but i won't use this anyway)
