SonicStage - you've got to be joking right?!

Hi guys,

A newcomer to Sony here.

Just bought the new NW-HD5H today, and can honestly say it is a FANTASTIC piece of equipment. The sound quality is superb, the size is great, and the battery life is meant to be really impressive too.

Such a shame that the software is so abysmal. Sony - you've really let yourself down here, because the hardware is stunning. The software is just crap.

My fault for not doing enough research though. I had hoped to be buying a "drag 'n' drop" style player. My partner just got a creative zen, and can drop files easily into it inside Windows Explorer, by using a really intuitive Windows Explorer extension.

No such luck with the Sony.

SonicStage is possibly one of the worst pieces of music library software going around (and I've tried a LOT). I am amazed an international calibre company like Sony could have permitted its release. It's buggy, slow when trying to process my hundreds of albums, simplistic, and completely inappropriate for what I want to do. The interface is ugly as well.

I already organise my music using albumplayer (www.albumplayer.com), an excellent piece of software which catalogues my hundreds of albums for me. My music is impeccably tagged and organised into folders already too. I have spent many MANY days doing this (sad but true) and do not need another program to help me organise my music. Especially one as terrible as SonicStage.

All I really want is a decent utility to transfer files over to my player.

OK. So this mp3filemanager utility is OKish, but far from satisfactory. It's just a bolt on utility Sony wrote. I want something a bit more flexible but not fantastically complicated. Something I can alter directory names and tree structures in once the files have been copied over would be nice.

Is there any piece of software out there I can use, or do I have to wait until Sony decides to rectify its mistakes and releases some decent software? Do they have any plans to release something that integrates better with the Windows file system? Anyone know?

Be interested to hear how more seasoned Sony users feel about this.

I don't think anyone really likes sonicstage, there have been quite a few threads on message boards complaining about it. Unfortunately, we'll never see any drag and drop functionality since the software encodes all files into a special format before it puts it onto your device so that you can't copy it on to any other computers. This is supposedly to prevent piracy... but it just pisses people off. Luckily, however, there is a new software that is coming out with the new model launched in the next month that will hopefully be compatible with the older models.

Im rather partial to the sonicstage interface if i do say so my self. i dont think sonicstage is as bad as some people make it out to be but i will say that it does slow down your system alot even with 2048RAM

I had the same problem, im a regular sony user from MD, NETMD to my recently purchased NW-HD5, which i agree is awsome! I have all my music organized in folders with proper ID3 tags, it took me hours upon hours to do this, and sonic stage just goes and screws it all up, im abotu 1/4 way through my music colection trying to organize it to work with sonic stage.

The one thing i do liek about sonic stage, at least the version i have with the NW-HD5 is tat you can organize things in play lists. Me beeing a person who likes to listen to "discs"(MD) i find it just like puting in a new MD, but insted bworsing to your playlist. Appart from that. its bloody slow! i tried it on my 500mhz machine, and got to the front screen in about 3 minutes!!! works fine on my 3.2gig machine though!
