blazer78
and can anyone tell me if a cotton bud + pure alcohol can clean the lens?
Silvadragon
cotton buds are bad 4 ur ears, never stick them in (cos i currently have a blocked right ear due to cotton buds), i'd think that u would require something more delicate to clean the lense.Yes maybe lens solution and a cotton bud may do it...*pls don't blame me for nething*
SlowMo
cotton buds = q-tips ?-q-tips by assumption:-ear cleaning - fine, if you use them the right way -lens cleaning - suboptimal, since they leave tiny cotton hair pieces on their way if you're not careful.using solvents on those lenses is potentially dangerous, but pure ethanol (="alcohol") should be ok.there are special brushes for photo lens cleaning, perhaps you could use one of those. (dry) -since the lens is covered, there should only be dust, no fat smears or such, and dry cleaning should work quite right.i once peeked inside of one of those lens cleaning md's, there's a brush attached at a certain spot, which brushes the lense once for each revolution. seems pretty rough to me. i'd prefer one of those photo lens brushes, but that requires disassembly... blazer78
oh ok, i just thought adding alcohol to the cotton bud before cleaning the lens would help as little or no cotton stuff would fall off since its wet thus sticks together
KJ_Palmer
I'd leave the lens well alone of anything - unless there's actually a problem. The optical assembly and lens should live out its life maintenance free as long as you keep it away from dust and dirt etc.... The general rule is 'clean' only when absolutely necessary (and then with caution)...
Wedge
If I needed to clean the inside of my MD, I'd be tempted to use an air blaster can first. If you know what I mean.
md-max
Doctors generally advise that you should stick nothing smaller than your elbow in your ear. I guess the same would apply to your MD unit. Edited May 12, 2005 by md-max
Silvadragon
thats true, my sister is an audiologist and she really hates cotton-buds. Yes, i also now do too cos its blocked one of my ears and is now cleared due to leaving it alone.Yeah, i wouldn't bother cleaning my lens, what makes u wanna clean the lens neway kanu? MDGB2
Olive oil is good for ears, probably NOT so good for electrical equipment though.... Some purists say that cleaning your lens (on a CD player) around once every two weeks improves performance, others say it just buggers the lens up.Personally, I've never cleaned the lens on an MD portable, but I have on a deck (cleaned the recording head for the first time in 6 years of ownership the other day. If it starts clicking or skipping, then it needs cleaning. Edited May 13, 2005 by MDGB2

If you know what I mean.←I wouldn't use compressed air, because it get very cold when close to the object (but too weak flow if too far). At least this is true for digital photography when cleaning the sensor.Use usual blower bulb instead - cheap and efficient.
Skradgee
*BUMP*So has anyone tried an old MD Lens Cleaner on a Hi-MD unit yet? I'm very interested since my MZ-NH1 has been acting up. If no one has, I'd be willing to try. Unless, someone can give me a good reason not to. Edited June 17, 2005 by Skradgee

It's formatted as a standard MD, so it plays back as such - even on the Hi-MD unit. The head cleaner is a bit different. Logically, you must record on the disc for it to clean the head. And as a result, it's then formatted as a Hi-MD disc. If you plan to use the same disc between Hi-MD and MD/MDLP units, make sure you re-format the head cleaning disc to 'MD' on the Hi-MD unit.
