well after much reading ... thanks to everyone. i think i have decided on the rh10 as my first HiMD unit. my main use/passion is recording live concerts and the OLED display seems really cool (replacing my cigarette lighter).

i am still a little unsure if there is a difference between the japanese and US models as far as the unit and accessories.

Japanese RH10: comes bundled with color matching RM-MC35ELK remote, color matching charging cradle and Worldwide AC Adaptor.

US RH10: comes bundled with non-LCD RM-MC60; this remote provides basic Hi-MD functions.

Both? I'd expect that the non-LCD model doesn't [since it has no display].

Be warned that attempting the record with a mic while a remote with display is plugged in is next to useless because the sound of the display updating will be picked up by the mic cable.

dex... you're absolutely right about the remote noise, I have experienced this as well... but I have also discovered that at a rock venue where earplugs are no excessive luxury this remote-noise can not be heard over the rest of the recording... so I still use the NH900/RM-MC40ELK combo for rock concerts in dark venues without any strange effects

but for more quiet situations, just depend on the OLED and ditch the remote

I got a regular grey "dust bag" with the RH10 I bought from that Japanese eBay seller mentioned here at the forums (buyfromjapan). It has actually done a good job keeping the face of the deck from getting scratches. I've meant to put a sheet of PDA screen protector on it for weeks now...and I still haven't, but by keeping the deck in the bag before putting it in my pocket, so far the screen has barely been scratched at all. I didn’t think much of it when it came with the deck, but now I don’t take the RH10 anywhere without it

The remote (with a display) that is shipped with the Japanese RH10 does not display recording levels...if that is what you were wondering.

Good evening. The past couple of recordings I've made while using MZ-NH900 / RM-MC40ELK remote combination, I noticed some background noise that I didn't hear before. Am wondering if it's from the remote...I don't recall reading this criticizm or I probably wouldn't have plunked down 70-some bucks for it. Then, of course, I make it worse when I boost the volume when editing the tracks to burn to CD...I could try to filter it out but that's a different issue...

One reason I like using the remote when I record (where I'm not supposed to be recording), in addition to being able to see recording levels and such in the dark, is that I can add track marks manually on the remote by using the P-mode button, and still keep the MD unit in a pocket.

Does the non-LCD remote that comes with the US version of the RH90 have a similar capability, i.e. to add track marks without having to pause the recorder?

Question: The MZ-RH10 requires a NH14WM-A battery, all I can find is NH14WM battery. WIll this battery work?

I'm not aware of what the difference is between them, to be honest. Perhaps if you started a thread in the tech discussion forum, another user could answer as to the difference.

Update after nearly a year of using the RH10 [and nearly 2 of using the NH700]:

* The RH10's face does scratch easily, but it also polishes easily [i use CD scratch repair polish, it works wonderfully].

* After almost a bear of near-daily use, I can say the build quality of this unit is great. Nothing is loose, nothing rattles, everything is pretty much as it was when it first arrived except for cosmetic wear around the corners.

* I use the unit at least 1/3rd of the time with the AA sidecar. The sidecar is as durable as the unit. I have no wear problems with either, even with regular use.

* I fully expect the display to outlive the optical block. [This is not to say I'll be right, mind you.]

* I prefer the sound of the NH700 when listening [the RH10's bump in the high end makes it slightly harsh to my ears, but note that I am hypersensitive in this regard, so it won't bother most people]

* I carry the NH700 [LCD] for daytime recording, and the RH10 [OLED] for nighttime recording. The NH700 is also great for times when a lit display is inappropriate or too obvious.

* [side-note] I also carry a ziploc sandwich bag for when it rains. It's hard to use the jog dial or roller of either unit through the bag, but it does save the unit from humidity. You can read the OLED through the bag quite easily.

I have no real complaints about either unit.
