After nearly 2 years and Sony botching hi-md and abandoning its own markets (car decks, home decks, professional decks, true SP "old school" recording) its a safe bet to say that there will not be any Hi-MD decks produced for the US or probably for any other country. I would not be surprised if Onkyo discontinues theirs as well.

Doubt it.

Sony would seriously be shooting themselves in the foot if this was really their was of thinking.

Well MD has seriously lost it´s status in some parts of the world, Europe and the states primarily. Here in Finland a lot of stores seem to be discontinuing selling Minidisc-equipment alltogether, which is a shame.

Keep an eye out for blank media sales! Morrisons seems to have discontinued carrying it and I'm kicking myself that I didn't pick up more than one of the Sony colours 80min. 5-packs when they were selling them for £2.99 ea. Sainbury's still has them for £7.99 which is a bit rich when you can get 10-packs of TDK colours from Virgin for £9.99 or HMV for the same price with a buy one/get one 1/2 price deal (last time I checked, which was a couple of months ago).

hair-old, please lighten up on the capitals... you realize it's like shouting in someone's ear? Also, don't overdo it on the punctuation...ppl will understand one "!" or "?" just as well as 3, 4 or even 7, but you won't seem as pushy.

It is very unpleasant to read and if some Sony employee reads this forum (and I'm pretty sure some of them do) they will very easily skip such irate outbursts and pay much more attention to the calmly presented and strong arguments put forward in some other posts.

greetings, Volta

PS: I would not be making this remark if it was a one time only shout, but you've been doing this quite consistently throughout a number of threads I've read recently

That's just because I'm getting fed up with Sony abandoning such a loyal consumer and fan base.

Sorry for the caps, but I feel I'm on a sinking ship...and Sony is the one punching holes in the hull underwater where you can't see them...

I'm probably the biggest MD fan in the southern USA...I have over 50 home decks. I have storages full of MDX-C800R car decks so that when they break I will have a spare. I am a HUGE supporter. I just feel that Sony is purposely giving the big finger to any of us who do real-time recording, use line outs, home recording, studio recording, and TRUE SP recording-the backbone of MD...and they are laughing while doing it.

I think I agree with hair old. Sony seems to be crippling everything HiMD (no deck, bad software, bad codecs) in order to dump the format in the near-future. The excuse will be that the technology couldn't keep up with the competition, but Sony will no give up and go on with their MP3 lines. The MD-fanatics will have their explanation why MD ended and Sony will be making big bucks in the MP3-business. Everybody happy (in reality the MD-fans are screwed).

i just wish someone would licence the hi-md physical format but basicly turn it into a general issue DAP system. ie, playing back most non-drm music formats and dealing with the discs as if they where a kind of floppy.

basicly the idea of a small size, 1 GB mo disc is damn nice. but the way its currently used is basicly going to kill it...

Wow...so I'm not alone on this issue?

Now that there seems to be SOME people who agree...what can we do to change this? Anything? Tascam is holding down the pro pre-hi-md market, but there is nothing for cars or homes....

Someone PLEASE try to give me a rational, intelligent answer as to why Sony would not include such simple things on its portables as:

1) Simple Line Out Choice: why on earth cripple it without this?

2) MDLP/"fake" SP USB recording: the most popular MD format (although the sound quality to me sucks); why abandon such loyal users?

3) Realtime SP recording: this takes the cake...MD was built on this, and most people still use it...all of the used equipment I've bought on ebay that comes with used discs, EVERY one is recorded in SP.

And don't give me the "they are moving on with the technology". When metal tape came out, did they take away the option to use normal and high-bias tapes??? NO.

Something sinister is happening here...like I said, Sony has a lot of stock of cryptonite. But, it seems on this site, if you state ANYTHING bad regarding Sony's handling of MD (i.e., stating how it is or at least how it blatantly seems) you get your posts removed.

Wow...so I'm not alone on this issue?

Have you ever read any posts in these forums? There are a lot of ppl here begging for more Hi-MD stuff like decks, car-units,... and also worried/complaining about abandoning a number of features without obvious (non-commercial) reasons (like line out or backwards compatibility)

And don't give me the "they are moving on with the technology". When metal tape came out, did they take away the option to use normal and high-bias tapes??? NO.

Well, you can still use old type discs and play previously recorded MD's as well, even on 2nd gen Hi-MD, and SS allows backwards compatibility... I can see that for a lot of ppl that isn't enough backwards compatibility, but I can also see that Sony thinks it is and that ppl will have to follow (this doesn't mean I agree with them!).

MDLP/"fake" SP USB recording: the most popular MD format (although the sound quality to me sucks); why abandon such loyal users?

Perhaps I understand you wrong, but you still can download from PC in the old formats.

Something sinister is happening here...like I said, Sony has a lot of stock of cryptonite.

Depends on how sinister you think everyday corporate decisions are... Sony sure isn't the only company making 'strange' moves. BTW...cryptonite?

But, it seems on this site, if you state ANYTHING bad regarding Sony's handling of MD (i.e., stating how it is or at least how it blatantly seems) you get your posts removed.

So you feel restricted by the mods on these forums? You think you can't say anything negative about Sony? I have to ask again: have you even read any of the posts here? Half of this forum is dedicated to helping ppl cope with the crippled software and the other half helps to solve all sorts of problems. That sure doesn't sound like they're all defending Sony, does it?

Perhaps if you stop and think for a while you realize it's not Sony we're defending here... it's MD and the potentially very beautiful Hi-MD format. It isn't 'Sony community forums' but 'Minidisc CF'! Even kurisu (the administrator) has expressed his hopes of Sharp making a Hi-MD player.

But no you're right... boo us who defend the positive aspects of Hi-MD (and Sony as they are the only ones producing Hi-MD players for now)... Yelling, damning Sony, complaining all the time and coming up with conspiracy theories will save the format.

If only we type enough in capitals or use enough emoticons...then Sony will listen to us...and if not, at least we scared away the last MD-users so the format will definitely die and we can blame Sony again for their malpractices that eventually killed MD.

Perhaps you could take a minute to contemplate about your posting style here on MDCF (typing in capitals, militant tone, over the top punctuation and emoticons,...). Could it be that your posts were removed 'cause of that? There are a lot of ppl saying almost exactly the things you're shouting and their posts don't get removed, do they?

IMHO Hi-MD rocks. Sure it has its fair number of child diseases, but please realize that you can hold in your hands a very portable machine that can record in CD-quality, upload it to PC and play music as well and all that for under $300!

I've said it before and I will say it again:

- those of you who like the Hi-MD format: speak out, show your friends and families and especially the we-puddle (aka i-podders) why, work with the positive aspects (and there are a lot) and demand further steps by Sony, but stop whining all the time, 'cause if I was Sony, I would kill the format just to get rid of all these negativists

- if you do not like the Hi-MD format (for whatever reason), don't buy it, period. But don't scare away other users, 'cause there are ppl who would like to see the format survive.

...if you say, hey but you didn't mention me: "I hate Hi-MD as it is, won't buy it or regret I did and now I will scream and be negative till Sony comes up with a better version and a full range of machines so I will like and perhaps even buy it", you're right. I didn't mention you, as I think you should choose between the two options stated above. Either you're constructive in public or destructive on your own... but don't kill the format for the rest of us, please.

What do you really think Sony would do if we all adopt your negative stance? They could listen to the small Hi-MD and MD users-group who are a bunch of whining, impossible to please 'pro'-sumers and make all your wanted adjustments or just kill the format and bring out another i-pod-alike success that will please a lot of 'easy' consumers...hm?

But if we keep a small but strong users group who work with Sony in a constructive way and point out to them the niche markets (with a lot of cash) they haven't even thought about (what will happen to all ex-DAT-pro's?) the format might survive in the HD-world...

Greetings, Volta

PS: sorry for this ranting, but I'm really fed up with negativistic conspiracy gabble... buy it or don't, if you do enjoy it while it lasts if you don't have a great life over on i-pod-forum or something...they love to hear "MD is dead"-stories

Mods, feel free to remove this, but Hair Old...I hope you will think a bit before you post another of your anti-Sony slogans

No, your summation is about dead on there Volta - we serve the community first, and will never bow down to the influence of companies such as Sony to the point where we dismiss anti-Sony rhetoric. Most topics that have been dismissed, locked, etc. have been done so because I won't have a community full of flames and so forth, as it leads nowhere.

The inital question in this topic has been answered. Locked.
