Christopher Posted June 29, 2005 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 In a followup to this thread..dex Otaku has cited numerous times that the MZ-RH10 is too easily scratchable. Comments such as,The first thing I did when taking mine out of the box was wipe it off with a soft, clean t-shirt [i am accustomed to cleaning my glasses and photographic lenses, so I know what materials are usually scratch-safe] and scratch the face over the display. A few days later I put the unit in my pocket and when it came out it had several scuff marks on it.I've since learned that the only way to carry the RH10 around and not get it scratched is to keep it in the grey felt Sony pouch at all times. Otherwise, almost any material will scratch the face. Don't even think of putting one of these puppies in your shirt- or jacket-pocket without that pouch...seem off in the myriad of discussions we've had here at MDCF regarding the MZ-RH10. Why is dex the first to consistantly note this flaw?As a MZ-RH10 owner, do you feel the same about this unit - have you had these problems? Did Sony mess up, or is this a case of misuse in regards to dex's experiences? I would like to hear your thoughts on this.p.s. dex, I'm not blasting your opinions on this matter and no additional disclaimers are necessary; I just want to hear more from the general consensus. KJ_Palmer Posted June 29, 2005 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 I'd say that sadly, yes the RH10 face plate is far too easily scratched. Perhaps its just that the reflectivity of the surfaces just shows up scratches that any surface would normally pick up. I'm not so worried now that I've got some plastic PDA covers to protect it - and that's fine, but for the first day or two I didn't have these - and just putting it in its case gave it a few of these horrid little slivers on the body - the actual OLED display itself seems OK though...Actually I have to confess though - rather anally I always cover LCD screens (including remotes) with this sort of sticky transparent plastic to ward off scratches - better that than the infamous toothpaste method... I must admit I was somewhat wary of buying the unit after Dex's warning, but it is beautiful - and apart from this, and one or two other (well-documented) minor niggles it's actually a fantastic unit... I possibly would have gone for the RH910, if the volume hack was confirmed, but I got a discount in the shop that brought the RH10 to within £20 of the price of the 910, so thought... why not... Sony should really have specced a harder plastic during the design phases. This is a massive flaw. Sony should really have been more on their toes. AcTs Posted June 29, 2005 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 I have the rh10 and used that clear packing tape for boxes,, you know the thick fat clear strip type as a cheap alternative to stop it from being scratched.. works fine and peels off easily without damaging the unit or leaving any residue or trace it was ever there.. Heck works fine for me until they come up with somehting better.. for me anyways.. uglor Posted June 29, 2005 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 i bought a rh10 about 2 months ago, and i noticed that it had scratches straight out the box. i had to return it because the lid kept popping open, and when i got my replacement (brand new in box), the new unit had even more scratches, not to mention something that looks like an oil spot on the oled. dex Otaku Posted June 29, 2005 Report Share Posted June 29, 2005 Please note that while I have been griping about this, I don't actually consider it so big an issue that I'd rather not have the RH10. Compared to the lack of timestamping, the scratchability of the RH10's face is very unimportant.Like I said in the same post quoted above, I fully expect to wear this unit in. I'm not that afraid of the scratches, they are simply an annoyance [especially considering the comparably indestructible face of the much less expensive NH700]. The PDA plastic is looking decidedly tatty, now, already, so I'll obviously have to keep replacing it (until I can't be bothered anymore...).Or I'd be interested if anyone can come up with a better solution... Susie h Posted June 30, 2005 Report Share Posted June 30, 2005 I've had my RH10 for nearly 3 weeks and it's not got scratched yet, although I am incredibly careful and have hardly take it out of the padded case I have since I bought it. That is no way to live though is it? I'm sure it's just a matter of time and although I'd like to keep mine looking good for as long as possible (mostly just to prove wrong my annoying MP3 player mad friend who berated me over buying a HI-MD rather than high spec MP3 and told me that OLED never lasts) but it's not going to stop me using it for the reasons that it was made. I'm using PDA's screen protectors cut to size for both units; on RH910 it's completely overlaying that transparent plastic insert and literally invisible, on RH10 it's cut up to the vertical buttons line, but since the unit itself is black, the screen protector is more or less visible... L7R Posted July 19, 2005 Report Share Posted July 19, 2005 This is totally off-topic, but I really want to tell it.In year 2000 I bought Sharp (Kenwood) over sony 'cause Sharp had screen made of glass. About 1,5 years ago I bought Motorola v70 phone, because it's only in the world which is made of aluminium and has screen which is made of glass. Both are proved me they are pretty much indestructible. There's really no paint left in the kenwood's remote, though.I'm sorry for you guys, but same time glad I bought NH1 over RH-10.
