cramf
Whenever I click on Optimize database in the options menu, sonicstage nicely tells me to close down any other programs that are running and that it may take a few minutes to finish optimization of the database. How long is a few minutes? I waited for 6 hours and nothing happend! No hardrive activity, no feedback from the program ie % or time remaining. I eventually had to close sonicstage via the taskmanager ! Sonicstage still works ok but i can't help thinking that if the database was optimised it would be that much quicker! Anybody have any ideas about optimization?Windows Me384MB ram160+Gb harddrive700Mhz pIIISonicstage 3.
The Low Volta
^^^first things first: if possible upgrade your SS to version 3.2 as it offers quite some advantages (like un-DRM'ed/copy-protected ripping of music, unlimited uploads of your own recordings (with HiMD) and more...) and more stabilitysecond... a good clean HD and a virus-free setting help as wellthird... if possible, try to find a windows upgrade (to XP or 2000, hell even 98 is better) as Me was the biggest junk ever produced by Microsoft (and it was confronted with some steep competition ) ...I was forced to use Me for a year and I am so glad I got that horrible thing replaced by XP

After Defragmenting make sure to reboot the machine before logging back in to SS and running the optimize. Richard
How big is your database?! I know the computer is a bit older, but still.. Sounds like a defrag may be in order at some point...
cramf
My computer really struggles with defrag - I usually have to do it in safe mode from bios boot-up. Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't. If I try defrag from windows ME it will just keep restarting itself untill it gives out an error message. Scandisk works fine but again I usually get the restart error. Last time PC got a scandisk and defrag was last month, and I've only just stuck in the PIII 700! I was struggling with a PII 333! I've got 2149 tracks on PC, some of the tracks are 60+ minutes, I should tidy it up a bit as some of the files are talking books for my kids, I did have the intention of setting up the minidisc in their rooms for night time bed stories but I find reading to them to be more fun.Again, thanks for all the help! The Low Volta
my advice of getting another windows version still stands... Me is such rubbish even the windows pinball freezes your PC if you happen to get at 2nd level (my sister actually enjoys that game and she caused about ten PC crashes before she realized it was that @*$ Me causing it)... my SS (2.0, 2.3 and 3.0) on Me never worked securely let alone fast and I defragged everything almost on a weekly basis (as the PC wouldn't run at all otherwise, it had only 14gb)so believe me, even '98 is better, but try to get 2000 (or XP if the machine can handle it)
cramf
Ah, Thing is I (ahem) upgraded from 98 as the PC kept crashing - ie rebooting and locking up etc, Since putting Win ME on the PC has been a lot more stable.
The Low Volta
well, I've never used 98 actually but a PC-savvy friend told me it was quite ok... but 2000 or XP would be a lot better of course. I installed and ran 2000 on the portable that came with Me withut any problems, so look around if you can get it... otherwise, hope SS keeps working
