mercury_in_flames
Now that i've got my deck, which i am thouroughly (sp?) enjoying by the way, this question has dawned on me lol, For those of you who own himd portable/s, and a legacy md deck: Do you find it a neusance making recordings to play back on your himd unit as well as your deck, i.e recording twice for each device? Or do you simply use one disc, as a rewritable music device for on the go, and whatever you record to regular md, you just record once and put on the rack, along with your other 'regular' discs?? I suppose it would be more of a neusance if you recorded in PCM or 320kb/s atrac, and used many himd discs. What I want to know is, For those of you that have regular md decks, does your himd portable make your deck redundent at times? Are you considering selling the old deck/keeping it, and ultimately getting a himd deck as well?
tommypeters
I use my MD deck only for copying those cassettes my wife has bought to MD, was the same before I bought Hi-MD portables.
KrazyIvan
Two completly different functions for me. My SP deck is hooked up to my CD player for optical dubs of CD's. My Hi-MD portable recorder is for recording live sessions via mic or line in.
Jacques
Two completly different functions for me. ... Same here, my MXD-D3 is still in use as for audio listening. -- Recently bought a DH10P mostly for use as a USB Mass Storage device, and to 'initialize' (format to Hi-MD Mode) my large cache of MDs to store and transfer files. + The camera has been quite useful to me as well! mercury_in_flames
Hmmm, I have an nw-hd5 for playing my atrac files on the go, and a regular md recorder if I ever go to a concert which is hardly often. Is it simply that himd doesnt suit my needs and I shouldnt bother?? The only reason why I would really get a himd deck would be for home audio use i guess. 1kyle
I use the MD deck (JB980) for all my serious listening -- Hi-MD stuff for outside recording or if I want to take 6 - 7 hrs on a single Hi-MD disk.My car radio plays the older MD format so I don't have a problem with that and if and when the time comes to replace the EXCELLENT JB980 deck for a HI-MD one I can easily convert recordings to HI-SP format if and when I have to.Note the 80 Min discs can also record in HI-SP mode with your HI-MD recorder so you don't waste disks -- 2 Hrs is still a reasonable time for portable music -- 3 or 4 disks take up almost zero space in your pocket. There are discussions all over the place as to whether the old SP format is as good / better than HI-SP. Quite frankly I don't think there is a lot of difference --and for portable music even LP2 can sound OK --especially if you play it on a decent high end shelf unit like a JB980.Even if the format were to finish tomorrow (which it won't) I could still use the deck for years to come as I've plenty of disks. -- Remember unlike CD's which are normally bought pre-recorded YOU make the MD recordings so even if there wasn't another unit on the entire planet it wouldn't stop you from enjoying your music at home.In fact if you can grab a high end unit such as the JB980 with great Optical In and OUT you'll probably be getting a great piece of gear at an incredibly cheap price. The lack of high end HI-MD units has really stopped me thinking about this anymore --if and when one appears I might buy into it or I might not. --I'm quite satisfied with my current setup however.Cheers-K
KJ_Palmer
Hi Greg . I use my JB980 for timed recording of DAB radio mostly, and playing back my legacy SP recordings collection. I don't bother too much making legacy SP MDs now, but I make LP2 recordings at the same time as Hi-SP discs, both on 80 min blanks. These sound almost as good as SP with Type S playback on the deck anyway, and if I want the best quality I can use my CD deck instead.Actually, I'm not sure I really 'need' a hi-MD deck at all, the portables are great for portable use, and I have other gear for playing at PCM quality on the home hifi... Syrius
I do feel that with the new 352 bitrate, I might not use my old portables anymore, other than for nostalgia's sake.
Alexx
WHYYou are speaking blasphemy. My old MD unit is now used by my boyfriend after it stoped recording. My new MD is used to move MP3s to MD in LP4ATRAC3 66 >> 64But now two of us have MDs- its upsetting though because even with battery attachment: my RH10 gets less time than my old yin
