RobA
I bought a pair of px 200's off amazon for 40 bucks because I thought the leatherette would reduce sweating. My ears actually get hotter even quicker with these than with my old headphones. I can't even make it through one song without taking them off. I'm actually starting to use the one's that came off my md player, I pealed off the cups on them so they stay colder longer, but slide off easily and aren't at all comfortable. Does anyone have any advice on how to keep ears from heating up? How do you guys make it? Edited November 26, 2005 by RobA
greenmachine
I've always disliked headphones that sit on (supra-aural) instead of around your ears (circum-aural). The latter type in combination with an open or semi-closed design helps for ventilation. Earpiece material and the amount of pressure are also decisive factors. mercury_in_flames
the only thing i find adds a little time is not wearing a sweater, just keeping the rest of yourself a bit colder.
RobA
So there is absolutely nothing I can do? This is driving me crazy.
greenmachine
Sooner or later the time will come to upgrade your headphones. Remember our words for your decision. Until then, there's propably not much you can do about it.
mercury_in_flames
I have ath-a900's, not the best there is of course, but if you want earphones that dont overheat your ears so much you would probably be best off with in ear earphones. i.e ex81, etys, shures etc.

If so I can't stand those, always falling out. My old headphones that I replaced with the px 200, were in ear headphones with the ear bud shape, but they went over your head so they wouldn't fall out. But they are some of the most painful headphones around.I really, really don't want to spend many on new headphones but it looks like I may have too. If that is the case, what ones can you wear for hours straight without your ears from overheating? I thought the leatherette headphones were the key, and I was wrong with the px 200. I have to get it right the 2nd time around. I think my best bet is real leather, not leatherette. Edited November 26, 2005 by RobA
The Low Volta
not buds but in ear like the top of the line shure and etymyotic models or even the (pretty cheap, $25) panasonic RP-JE50's (just see the link in my signature)... sony has some models as well, but after reading quite a bit I thought the pana's were more value for money

Both extremely uncomfortable.
The Low Volta
sorry to hear that... limts your search quite a bit. For me most buds are unusable (pop out or hurt like hell) but the in-ear/canal-type works wonders (admittedly after some 'getting used to')!maybe the senn PX100? they are open type so won't heat up as much. they do let outside noise in and your music (with the body warmth) out... Is it that fuzzy stuff? Anything that I can't even put a finger on.Edit-nevermind, I'm not allowed to get new headphones. This sucks, now I'm stuck with these px 200's that I can't even get through a song with. Edited November 26, 2005 by RobA
mercury_in_flames
so sony mdr-EX81's would hurt your ears? Etymotics come with boatloads of sizes so i wouldve thought those would be your best bet, but they are even more than my ath-900's and in my books, too expensive for 'phones that fragile. I mean why have a pair of earphones that you would want to wear outdoors that could break so easily? If it were me i'd be crapping myself every time i took them out if i did ever decide to do so. A440
Maybe you can get a refund from Amazon for the PX200 and exchange them for the PX100. Or sell them (in Classifieds here or at www.head-fi.org or on eBay) and buy the PX100. The PX100 are foam, not leather or leatherette, and they don't seal to the ear, so air circulates. They're extremely light--I sometimes forget I'm wearing them at all. Equally comfortable, though not as good-sounding in my experience, are Koss Porta-Pro. Leather would give you the same problem as leatherette. The problem is the seal. Imagine having your ear next to a leather jacket or a leather carseat for a hour. It would get warm. In-ear phones--canalphones--are different from earbuds. They have soft earplug-like sheaths that mold to your ear, not some hard little speaker wedged in there. When you have some money saved up, try Shure E3 (gray) or Shure E3c (fake Ipod white). They are much sturdier (and to me sound better) than the Etymotic, and they shut out the outside world. But I really can't go after anything else anyway. I just can't deal with myself wasting money on the px200's. Looks like I'm screwed.Edit- Well I found a solution. The PX200's are very adjustable, and I adjusted them so they aren't actually leaning on my ear, there off my ear, keeping air on them which prevents them from heating up. Thanks to everyone for your replies. Edited November 27, 2005 by RobA
