smith1076
Hello Im a newbie. Im about to win a Sony MD off ebay. I didnt read the specs before I clicked confirm bid and the player only has a line in. Im buying a Sony ECM-MS907 mic. It is powered, so will I have a problem recording? sorry if this is covered in FAQs, I did look but perhaps not enough. Thank you for your help. A440
With some mics, a battery module like this: http://www.microphonemadness.com/products/mmcbmminminc.htmwill let you record loud amplified music through Line-in. Unfortunately, it seems the ECM 907 isn't one of them. Edited December 21, 2005 by A440
greenmachine
I don't think a battery module would improve the situation there - most Sony mics are internally battery powered. But their rather low sensitivity make them hardly usable at the line-in. Maybe re-sell the recorder and get one with mic-in?

I used to use a Sony ECM717 mic via a Sound Professionals battery box and line in and had great results. Never used an internal battery either. dex Otaku
A battery module would work fine. I used to use a Sony ECM717 mic via a Sound Professionals battery box and line in and had great results. Never used an internal battery either. The ECM717 features "dual-way powering' meaning it can be powered either by a battery on itself or from an external source with plug-in power. The MS907 does not have this feature [or at least, the several I've used in the past 4 years haven't had this feature, and yes, I've tried to power one externally].A battery box will not work with this mic. It will in fact serve no function whatsoever.smith1076: with really loud sources, the MS907 might work through the line-in [same as any powered mic that uses a battery box]. I have doubts this would be very effective though, because of the MS907's low bias voltage [1.5V AA battery]. What you really need is a microphone preamp. Examples of this are linked below:http://www.reactivesounds.com/spa2.phphttps://www.soundprofessionals.com/cgi-bin/.../item/SP-PREAMPThat said, chances are you would be much better off just getting an MD or HiMD recorder that already has its own mic preamp built in.
