Error installing Sonicstage 3.0

Ok, so i'm following your instructions found in This Thread, and I get to the registry edit part and I skip out on it because I know that if something is deleted and it was needed, the computer will never start up again. I have no decent means of backing up my data, and I'm pretty much a pansy when it comes to removing 'dead' entries. I try installing the program using the full web-enabled version Located here. I get an errror during installation that says the installation was terminated, and gives me the numbers 2051 and 20703.

I decide to go for the registry edit. I delete the whole 'Sonicstage' directory, as well as 'OpenMG' and 'OpenMG Jukebox' or whatever it was. I now have a sinking feeling that I did something wrong, and that i'm pretty much Screwed.

I try to install again, no dice, same two numbers. What's going on here?

I am currently running a Windows XP Service Pack 2 machine. I had SonicStage 2.0 and MD Simple burner 2.0 installed previously.

Try not to be too cranky, Zombi3. This is an unofficial, strictly volunteer site and we don't have access to the inner (non)workings of Sony software. The FAQ and the Mdac repair tool (in Downloads) seem to solve most problems, though apparently not yours.

Congratulations on editing the registry. As long as your computer is rebooting, there's nothing to be scared of.

You could try clicking on the live chat site at Sony

http://esupport.sony.com/EN/feedback/feedback.html

and see if they can identify exactly what those error numbers mean. You'll have to be patient and persistent and demand to escalate. Any answers you get would be welcome here.

Usually uninstall problems have two causes. 1) Something is preventing the installer from altering the registry, or 2) some module is not found.

2) is something you'll have to decode from the error message.

For 1), you could disable anything security related: antivirus, firewall, anti-spyware, etc. Norton, Kaspersky, Trend Micro, Black Ice, Aluria, Spyware Doctor, Microsoft Anti-Spyware, Spybot, Black Ice, Zonealarm, and a long etc.

Some start automatically when you boot up and keep going even after you disable them (like Black Ice Firewall), so before diabling anything you might:

Run: msconfig and look in the Startup Tab and uncheck anything security related.

That doesn't disable currently running programs--it prevents them from starting automatically after rebooting. (Norton's programs are under Symantec, BTW. Google program names that aren't obvious--ignore the sales pitches for WinTasks or whatever.) Unless all your startup items are currently checked, make a list of what you're unchecking so you can add them again next time around--their order will change. (If they are all checked, you can just recheck them all, of course.) APPLY, disconnect from internet and reboot with those items unchecked.

Then try the offline installer and see if something was getting in the way.

Run: msconfig again, recheck what you unchecked and reboot before going online again.

I already have most everything disabled on startup. If something pops up, I kill it with the Task Manager. I had already attempted to talk with their live chat people, and they turned me to their hotline number, saying that they aren't sure if even they would know what was going on. They did not explain the numbers to me. Everything the chat had walked me through was done already from the Support FAQs i've looked at here.

I even attempted to install the program offline, but it did not work. I still got the same error message at the exact same time.

I've solo'd the problem down to the OpenMG part of the installation. Right as it gets past the 'OpenMG Secure Module' and the 'OpenMG Limited Patch' is when it screws up. Right after the OpenMG Secure Module is installed, the OpenMG limited Patch installer goes from 0 to 100% in one second, then says that the installation was Terminated, giving me the error numbers 2051 and 20703. Afterwards, I preceed to uninstall all the components that were left behind due to the incomplete installation, and try again later.

C:\Documents and Settings\user\Local Settings\Temp

Make sure you close down all opened programs and delete all the files in this directory (where 'user' is your username)

Might just be just some crusty temp files interefering with the extraction of the install files.

http://forums.minidisc.org/index.php?showtopic=8071

Steps 1 to 4 under "How to properly reinstall NetMD/Hi-MD". I know you've gone here before, but doing every single step is very important. Not just backing up, uninstalling all the stuff listed and deleting the directories listed there but also the registry stuff:

----

Going to:

Start then Run and then typing regedit. Hit Enter.

Now navigate down the yellow folders, step-by-step, to:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Sony Corporation/Sonicstage right-click and delete

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software/Sony Corporation right-click and delete

----

Can't be stressed enough.

No damage will happen if you only do what's described there. Those steps (all of them, 1 to 4, inclusive) should give you a 'clean slate' to work from. Now, if that doesnt work, it's possible your system is suffering from something else, but work from there and see how you go. Double check and triple-check you're doing it all right.

Been following these instructions to the Crossed T and Dotted i all day. Still nothing. I tried cleaning the temp folder as you suggested, and it did nothing. I have even gone so far as to wipe every mention of the word OpenMG and OMG in my registry, and I still get the exact same error.

I'm pretty much stumped here.

OK, try something for me.

When you start Sony's web installer for SonicStage 3.3 (not the integrated installer found on this board), can you tell me the name of the component which starts downloading first? It will show up in a list on the left-hand side. Better yet, make a screenshot of it, so we can see each of the listed components it has determined you need.

Reason I ask is the web installer will determine what (if any) Windows components you will need before the Sony files start getting installed. This could give us hints as to what's going on on your system. You can press Cancel once seeing the list, or you can see if the web installer will work for you now. I have actually seen problems with the integrated offline installer on this board (3.2 version). I haven't tried the integrated 3.3 offline installer here yet based on my bad experiences with the 3.2 version, which would always install OK, but the Hi-MD device would never be detected in SonicStage, depsite it being seen in Explorer just fine when SonicStage wasn't running.

The point is, the offline installer might be giving you issues where the web installer might not.

In the meantime, if you're not sure your system is 'clean', you can try cleaning out your system with programs such as:

Spybot Search & Destroy http://www.safer-networking.de

Lavasoft Ad-Aware http://www.lavasoft.de

TrojanHunter http://www.trojanhunter.com

Grisoft AVG http://free.grisoft.com (if you currently use antivirus, uninstall your existing version before installing this one)

...remembering first to update the definitions before scanning for problems in each program.

Good luck!

Out of all those programs on your list, the only one I don't use is Trojan hunter. Great programs.

Cool. TrojanHunter is the only one there not free, but a good one to get rid of nasties and then just uninstall.

I took a screenie from the 3.3 US web installer. Here it is.

Looking normal to me. It starts downloading the Sony files, with no Windows updates needed.

I'm assuming the web installer errors out just like the offline installer?

It gets to the OpenMG Secure Module installation before it screws up. It always says that it is interuppted during the installation and is terminated.

That's an alternative way of installing with the web installer, but it's a bit more involved.

I'm uncertain if that will help you, but it might be worth a shot. It has never failed me, and because I like to keep files on disc (and have had problems with the offline installer here), I always use this method to install SonicStage with absolutely no problems.

But if I had to suspect something now, I'd say it seems to be a registry problem of some type. But that's only a guess. Seems to require some troubleshooting..

Didn't work. The OpenMG installer had the exact same screwup that it always does when it's with a Web installer or the offline installer.

Been on the phone with customer Service for 2 hours and 37 minutes. Most of that is being on hold for this so called 'Product Specialist' to pick up the phone.

Ok, they asked me for my amount of RAM, Processor Speed, and Graphics card. They told me that an engineer was going to be working on it and would hopefully have an answer within the next two days. Of course, i'm still trying to see what I can figure out on my own. I'd be pretty happy if they called me and They said "Ok sir, we have the results." And I could just Smile and say "Oh that's ok, I fixed it already."

I thought that I would add, that when I use the stand alone installer for the OpenMG, it does not act funny at all. It seems like it's going to install just fine, and then as it's publishing the information (the last step?), it pauses. Then it proceeds to tell me that the program was interrupted and the installation never finished.

EDIT:

I just tried to install in Safe Mode, and even though everything installed in about 1-2 split seconds, It once again screwed up in the exact same fashion during the OpenMG installation. I tried to use the piece-by-piece installation, but it said that it could not find the Installshield stuff required for it. An odd thing I noticed is that every time I try to install this thing, it takes up another chunk of my harddrive that doesn't come back when I delete the temp files and the other pieces of the leftover stuff.

Pardon me for being a tad bit impatient, but after repeated calls to Sony's Tech support line and constantly getting shifted around like a toy i've grown a little tired of the game.

Does anyone have any more ideas reguarding getting this stuff installed? If any more information reguarding my computer is needed I will provide it to the best of my ability. Just as long as I can get this thing working.

Just tried something that failed. I reinstalled 2.0 off of the disc I found. EVERYTHING, including the OpenMG secure Module worked. I was able to boot up 2.0 with no problems. I try to install 3.3 on top of this, and it instead uninstalls everything that was there previously, and takes forever to install the new stuff. Yet the same exact error popped up at the exact time it always has, right when it's installing the new version of the OpenMG Secure Module. That was with the Web installer. I haven't tried using the offline installer yet, but I don't think it would work with the official 2.0 on there.

Reinstalled 2.0, rebooted, tried using the Offline installer, and it came to the OpenMG installer again. It stalled, uninstalled the older version of the OpenMG secure Module, and the installer than continued, exactly how it always does. Finally, at the end, the installer stalls while at the 'publishing information' step, and BAM.

[attachmentid=1275]

This pops up. Just like it always has. So here's the rundown so far:

-SonicStage 2.0

i.)Older OpenMG works

ii.)SonicStage 2.0 works

-SonicStage 3.3

i.)Newer OpenMG does not install.

ii.)SonicStage 3.3 refuses to boot without the newest Version of the OpenMG Package.

iii.)Both Offline and Online installers refuse to install the OpenMG Secure Module and Limited Patch.

The 3.3 installer is for some reason, being 'terminated' or 'interuppted' (The Web Installer says the installation was Terminated, Offline says interuppted.) as it is attempting to install the OpenMG Secure Module and Limited Patch. Even following the instructions found in this thread, and removing all traces of the program, it is somehow still interuppted.

SonicStage installs fine.

OpenMG, however, will not.

Forgive me for my lack of understanding, but what is it exactly that i'm supposed to do with the MDAC repair tool? What is it that i'm looking for exactly to fix?

EDIT: I instead decided to use the MDAC reinstall instructions found in the Software FAQs thread, and tried installing with the 3.2 installer. The install failed, the same spot, the exact same way it always does. No matter what, it seems that I cannot use any new versions of any form of OpenMG, which is bad because I want to be able to use SonicStage 3.0 and up's new features which seem to be more in my interest than 2.0.

Ok, I just got my call i've been expecting from Sony. According to their engineers:

My computer needs to be reset to a factory preset. I have to remove my Graphics card and extra RAM sticks. This will basically return my computer into a near worthless bucket of bolts. They did say that 'we cannot force the end user to do so, so it IS up to you'. Why, thank you Sony. You screw over systems but it's our choise wether to let you bend us over and use us like Fresh Fish?

For the moment, i've decided to use it as a storage device with my comptuer, and will install sonicstage on a different computer and send all my stuff I want to listen to over to that one.

If anything else arises, let me know if you find anything. I'll let anyone know if I find a way around what the problem is myself.

Thanks to all again who were paitent enough with me. Maybe our findings can help out someone in the future.

Q: Did the Sony engineers sound like they actually knew computers and SS, or were they reading from some script?

If you do think they were actually connecting with you instead of just blowing you off, then, well, how difficult would it be to remove the graphics card and extra RAM?

I'm just wondering: If you were to do that (and one more full-registry uninstall), and then you got SonicStage 3.3 to finally finish installing, maybe you could then put the card and RAM back in and SS 3.3 would continue to work since it was already installed.

No, I don't believe in Santa Claus.

You're probably sick of the whole thing by now. But if you feel like making one more sacrifice for the cause....

The last guy I got said that he thinks changing things around is an unnessicary ploy Sony gives to scare off customers. He gave me a direct link to his extention, and we will be working on this heavily tomorrow afternoon. I will post the results. If they are inconclusive, I will remove my card and RAM, install, and test from there.

You just need to reinstall Service Pack 2 or Windows itself -- it's corrupted. If you have the original Windows CD or whatever, try going to start and run and put in "sfc /scannow" without the quotes. Don't waste your time on all this nonsense they're putting you through, I promise it's not worth it.

2051 = NoFault Data

20703 = Interactive

This is what I got out of the current Tech Support guy i'm speaking to. Apparently they are 'programmers codes.'

Explain further? Where is this applicable?

Whew! I have to say that I've been trying to get this newer version of Sonicstage installed on my Vaio for the longest of time, but hadn't been able to for reasons unknown. I ran into this thread because all of the problems that are being discussed here were the exact same ones occurring on my machine as well, down to the error codes. I tried every trick mentioned on this forum to alleviate the problem (especially the registry tricks), but it persisted. Finally I just decided to do a system restore with the factory install cd's (which rolled my Sonicstage back to 2.x). I installed the new sonicstage software without uninstalling the old one's and eveything went smoothly. I have to reinstall a lot of stuff, but otherwise, I'm happy. I also wish I decided on it sooner. Thanks for your help guys.

System Specs:

Sony VAIO PCVRX951 (P4 - 2.66GHZ)

1GB RAM

Windows XP Home (rolled back to sp 1)

Geforce 4 MX440 (64MB)

MD Units:

MZ-R700 (with hack)

DS-HMD1 HI-MD Portable USB Drive [records data or music to HI-MD/MD discs]
