Was hunting around this forum for around an hour but couldn't find anything that has to do with what i am about to ask.Hm so here goes:I owned a Sony MZ-NH900 Hi-MD player, which comes with a battery case. The included instruction manual stated that the battery case is for use with dry batteries (those akaline non-rechargeable stuffs). I would like to ask if its ok to use rechargeable Ni-NH or Ni-Cd AA batteries in the battery case attached to my unit, together with the internal gumstick battery?Anyone tried? I read in this thread that a dry battery is recommended and that rechargeables are not. Hmm. I have no idea if it's true or not.Sony's manual for the MZ-NH900 states dry battery, last I looked. The Low Volta Posted December 29, 2005 Report Share Posted December 29, 2005 I have absolutely no clue on whether it is 'good' for you HiMD/batteries etc...but I have been using my NH900 with a 1400mAh gumstick and 2300/2500mAh (depending on which one is full) AA batteries in the AA add-on for almost a year now... still to see my first 'problem' caused by that and I must say that the battery life with this combo sure rocks!so in short...dunno but I too would love to hear a real decent scientific explanation on this one... good question! Qwakrz Posted December 29, 2005 Report Share Posted December 29, 2005 The only reason I can think of that sony would say use dry cells only is that it connects directly accross the internal battery & will charge it all the time the dry cell is atached. If you put a Ni-MH battery in there then there is a chance that if the internal one is fully charged and the external one is not, the internal will charge the external.Personally I have used Ni-MH cells in the external case since I have owned my R900 and never had a problem, still use them now with my RH10. tommypeters Posted December 29, 2005 Report Share Posted December 29, 2005 The second possible reason is that the rechargeable batteries have lower voltage - 1,2V compared to 1,5V - but I have also used Ni-MH batteries without any problems, though I usually don't attach the external AA pack until the gumstick has run out. Alexx Posted December 29, 2005 Report Share Posted December 29, 2005 I would like to say that when refering to the dry-cell attatchment we use the phrase "side car" I would like to responde to the user who mentioned the voltage: Because of the larger capacity involved in the AA cell, then it maintains 1.24 volts longer than the internal cell will: so there really shouldn't be a case where the internal is charging the external.I also use both internal and sidecar at the same time: and if they are both fully charged the life of my RH10 is similar to that of my old portably MD player- about 25 hours.Don't believe everything you read in the little books. The battery lifespan is about 60% of what they say because we use the fast-forward, rewind and stop function. My gumstick usually discharges trying to charge a Ni-MH in the battery adapter. It was very annoying the first time it happened. I don't use Ni-MH's in the battery adapter any more. Its not a new player, bought it since the beginning of this year.
