BassoonLady
Do metal detectors in airports harm minidisc's.. Are the discs magnetic? Edited January 18, 2006 by BassoonLady
Syrius
Yes, they are. But without the heat of a laser to warm the disc up, the magnetic info cannot be changed. I think only one of those magnets used in car junkyards would be strong enough to damage a MD.
sebastianbf
I have passed my bags a few times on the airport's metal detector with minidiscs and even a portable player on it. Nothing happens at all.
Qwakrz
There are 2 ways to erase an MD disc.1) Heat it upto its phase change point (I think its 180C) and then submit it to a small magnetic field.2) Use a mega powerfull magnet. I think an experiment was done with a rare earth magnet and it had to be placed on the disc (i.e shutter open and the magnet placed onto the actual disc) to actually damage the data. Most magnetic fields in every day use will not affect minidisc. The only place I can think you'll have problems with minidisc is if you are in an RMI machine but I would seriously question things if they let you take a minidisc into one. hobgoblin
heh, about RMI's. if you have access to discovery channel, there was a mtyhbusters episode where they tested of iron-based tatoo ink would react to the magnetic field.at one time hey had some boxes of ink (one with some extra strong mix of the iron based one) sitting on the "bed" while they powerd up the magnet. the box of heavy ink was flying thru the air.basicly, those things would destroy the very player, so worrying about the discs at that point is just silly. KrazyIvan
I have passed through airport security with my gear and had no problems. I would leave a CMOY amp at home though. They just look to suspicious to the screeners.
