CDDB stopped working

Hi Guys

This is my first post so be gentle with me. I have uploaded from CD for a few days to my Sony HI-MD MZ-NH900 with no problems. The CDDB link gave me the CD information straight away. I then copied across a couple of mp3's using Sonicstage with no problems.

Then my son loaded software for his mp3 player - a creative jukebox NOMAD zen !! ( He has not admitted to changing anything else but is a demon button clicker ) .Now when using MD simple burner or Sonicstage an error message pops up saying terminating the CDDB program. I have tried re-registering with Gracenote but this also brings up the same error box.

I have windows xp sp2 and Norton antivirus / firewall etc. This is not blocking access as far as I can tell.

Can anybody shine a light on what to do. I haven't tried re-installing the Sony software yet but will try that tonight. Filling in the track names is something I really don't want to do. Any help appreciated.

It's quite possible that there is some conflict between the CDDB access used by SS and the Creative software. What is your objective - to keep both applications installed? (Otherwise I would obviously suggest uninstalling the Creative software ;) ). If so is it possible you can check if there are any background services used by the Creative app that may need to be temporarily disabled for SS to run successfully.

I would really like to keep both applications as they will be in constant use. I will have a look in the creative software to see if I can see anything to deactivate it temporarily and let me access the CDDB site. The other option is of course re-installing my sofware to see if it overcomes the problem. Would upgrading to the new Sonic stage 3.3(4) help I wonder?

SS3.4 is a worthwhile upgrade for all Hi-MD users, but that's a different story. The question is will upgrading or reinstalling SS re-enable CDDB for SS at the expense of access for the Creative software.

Perhaps try and see if you can disable the access for Creative (maybe have a search on the Creative support knowledge base as well) and confirm that SS.3.3 still works and that re-enabling it causes no issues for Creative. Then upgrade to 3.4 and repeat the process to see if the 2 are capable of co-habitation as it were.

Thought I would try once more and now MD Simple Burner refuses to work and the icon in the start bar has gone. It is still there in my sons user name though !!

There doesn't seem to be a way of disabling the creative software and their website does't offer any solutions.

I will try a uninstall and reinstall and possibly an upgrade tonight but should I also delete all files in the Simple burner / Sonicstage folder?? I also looked at the version I have and it is 2.1 so its relatively old.

Hope somebody out there can help.

Look at Start/Run and type in msconfig. Click the Startup tab. It will tell you all the things that are loading at startup, and Creative is bound to be in there. If you can't tell what a file is then type the name (xxxxxxx.exe) into Google to find out.

Uncheck the Creative software and reboot, and see if that will help. You can probably leave it unchecked. After you've tried SonicStage/SB then open the Creative software to make sure it works. Then look at Startup again to see if it snuck itself back in. With any luck, you won't have to uncheck it again. Somewhere in its Options or Preferences it should have an option to automatically load at startup, which you should disable. (You might want to do the same thing with SimpleBurner.)
