high freq. blips when rec.

when i record from a microphone (a cheap mono mic ripped from a headset) on my MZ-NHF800, there are some high frequency blips (~15 kHz) that are recorded. they sound like they're generated from the motor or the processor when it compresses (Hi-LP 256 kb/s in my case). i don't think it has something to do with the microphone, it sounds great with no noise and hiss and it's far enough from the recorder. i even placed the induction eliminator on the microphone cable. i will make a PCM recording to eliminate the possibility that they are generated by the compression process. regardless, i still am dissapointed if this issue is unresolveable for the Hi-LP mode because it's a superb resolution for recording the full hearing range with top quality and makes lots of recording time on a 1 GB Hi-MD.

Are you using a remote control? The remote might cause these unwanted sounds.

TV has 15575hz output, and I can pick it up with my mics built with unshielded cable.

Can you post a sample of the recording?

Recording by mic with remotes that have a display can cause issues like this, though the noise is far lower in the audible band [voice frequency] than 15kHz.

TV sets can cause this but the EM noise from them should be constant, not intermittent.

If you're not using a remote with display [the tuner remote has one], perhaps you could also try recording in a completely different location to see if it still does the same thing.

when the remote is disconnected, i'm so happy that you all are resoursefull

p.s. i've been reading about the service hacks, especially the volume hack.

my model is MZ-NHF800, purchased in canada. the volume is constantly rising

all the way through to 30 (especially from 25 to 30). does that mean that

i have the louder output everybody is hoping to get by hacking the unit?

i have plugged it with SONY MDR-V300 monitor headphones, i think the

impedance is max. 24 ohms, and on level 30 they're bumping, of course

not as loud as the original earplugs (~16 ohms). it allways depends on the music level.

any perticular hack that i shouldn't miss out?

I use the RM-MC40ELK with MZ-NHF800. It's fully compatible. No blips for me. There is a short bit of very quiet static when you view its display or change the recording level while recording--audible with mic-in and quiet music, but not usually with loud music or line-in recording. I try to check the display during applause, when the static doesn't matter.

I briefly had the RM-MC38EL and it was also compatible. The advantage of the MC40ELK is that is has visible recording level meters that you can watch as you adjust the level, if that's what you need it for.

To add to what A440 said already: this will happen when recording with mic and using any remote with a display. The key to whether it's bothersome or not is simply whether the source you're recording is loud enough to mask the noise.

Line-in recordings should not be affected at all, as the EM noise is so low that it only becomes a problem when significant gain [i.e. by the mic preamp] is applied to it.

In any case, I simply don't record with a remote connected. It's not worth the risk, in my view.

I have the NH900+RM-MC40ELK combo and I do use the remote when recording loud(er) shows, but then I use a 'Battery-box -> line-in' setup. As Dex said, this obviously negates all noises as they aren't amplified by the preamp (by using line-in) and the music would be loud enough to mask them if they would actually be audible.

when recording quieter stuff (mostly speech in my case) I simply do not use the remote as I'm mostly in a situation where I can see the non-lit LCD screen well enough to make out the rec-levels so for me the issue is inexisting (though I have noticed it while experimenting)

PS: If you do get a remote, just go for the RM-MC40ELK and forget about the rest as it is the only remote to show recording-levels
