thedonutman
Hi everyone,Ive been a owner of a MZ-N1 for about 4 years, its been fine for all that time.however recently its been very unreliable, the discs dont always load, when it first started happening it said "read error", but now it just doesnt load and i get a battery symbol, a spinning disc symbol, and lots of funny noises(wowwow wow wowowowowow). It seems to work on and off, its well out of warrenty, ive done a search and it seems like people have this with recording. but for me its also listening(havent tried recording). has anyone had this problem before and can you guys help me?thanks,
Ishiyoshi
It appears that your MZ-N1's optical unit has expired. This is a common problem experienced by many MZ-N1 users - the optical unit of this 1st generation NetMD unit is not as durable so to speak as its later units.Nonetheless, you have two options: You could either send it to Sony for repair (a repair fee that could get you a new Hi-MD unit) or acquire a new unit - preferably a Hi-MD unit.*topic moved to "NetMD + MDLP" section
jaylen
I'd go with Ishiyoshi's 2nd recommendation. My N1 was never dropped and in mint condition, but still conked out. I'd get the "blankdisc" or "read error." It quit recording and eventually became inconsistent when playing discs. Contacted Sony and it would cost a little over $100 + shipping for repair (IF they're able to fix it) or around $200 for a replacement (refurbished N1 or "similar"). I sold mine to a friend who wanted to open it up and tinker with it.Go Hi-MD. The units are pretty affordable now and there are some good bundles for a decent price. Good luck! thedonutman
Thanks for the replies guys,Im REALLY annoyed about this...ive been deprevived of portable musc(the headphones on my phone dont work either )I Kinda want to get a hard drive player(maybe i shouldent have said that in a MD forum ), but right now im also looking for hi-MD alternatives. Ive seen these on ebay:Sony NH1and sony RH10,The NH1 looks really really nice(slimmer than my N1 and an ipod photo), however it is the first generation, so im scared that it will wind up like my N1, could this be the case? are these things now reliable to get used off ebay? Or does anyone have any other suggestions for around 100 pounds.Joe
jaylen
A lot of forum members have the NH1 and RH10. Both are quite reliable. I've seen members with even 2 NH1s. Since you had the N1, you would like the NH1. But if you want a change from the full metal body, then try the RH10.Off the top of my head... (best if you did a search)Both can record from a mic and have the HD digital amp. RH10 can play native mp3; NH1 no. NH1 can record in true SP; RH10 no. RH10 has the OLED display; NH1 has a 1-line display. RH10 is bigger and has plastic; NH1 is made of brushed metal. RH10 (if non-Japanese model) will have a cheapy, non-LCD stick remote; NH1 has the MC40ELK. There's more differences, but a search would help you out better.Based on looks alone, I'd go for the NH1. Some say the to-be-released RH1 has taken styling cues from the NH1. But, if you're going to do a lot of live recording, then the OLED display of the RH10 would be best for you.As for Ebay, it's really buyer beware (if you're talking about getting it used). I think that people who buy these things first-hand would take really good care of them. But then again, you have to wonder why they are selling it. I've heard good things about etronics.com. I think they have the RH10. The NH1 is harder to find in e-tailer stores though (mostly sold-out, but audiocubes.com is selling it for A LOT). Good luck! A440
Etronics gets decidedly mixed reviews. For instance: http://forum.ecoustics.com/bbs/messages/22/220.htmlDonutman, got any friends in the US? You can get the NHF-800 new on Ebay (US) for $150, and the NH700 cheaper. I think I saw the NH700 for 67.50 GBP recently, too. Those are new units, probably bought during the Australian closeout. Or if you want to move away from MD, there are plenty of flash and HD players to choose from.
jaylen
Yeah, those Ebay sellers most likely got the units from the Aussies because they are selling the bundle contents (MD unit plus that bonus CD, 5-pack of 80 min discs, MD case, and microphone) in separate auctions.I hope the T-Board members who recently bought their DH10Ps from etronics (2 that I know of) see that thread! Hopefully, they will have better luck if they ever have to deal with their customer service.
