Tiesto
The new member of the family finally arrived, a beautiful HD5 red. When I ordered from Vanns I was kind of worried because I knew that the player came packaged in a blister but out the cardboard box, I thought that the packing would be unsafe for transportation if you think about the LCD display and the hard drive. Fortunately Vanns packed it quite good and the blister came with no bumbs, no scratches hence the player. After 17 days of waiting, 5 hours of charging and 2 hours testing I can say what amazing audio device, it feels quite well designed, too similar to my Sharp DS70 but heavier which is good because it can not beat the E10 confort for outdoor usage, in fact any of my players can, that way the usefulness of my md units will keep intact (the HD5 might be a MD killer you know) My new player has a look, well, like a cool as hell red gameboy! The buttons are soft and solid (I hope they wont get cracked), the user interface is intented to a 10 years old kid, I havent even seen the manual nor the quick guide, it's too easy! The mp3 transfering with SS 3.3 was simple and fast (I dont know why people complaints about it afaik iTunes works the same way). The sound in Atrac format (132k) is identical to the NH900 one, the mp3 (192k) sounds just like LP2 in my MZ-NF610, good but not excellent as Atrac. On the other hand, I do have one complaint and one worry so far: A. The cover for the USB is so fragil as it wasnt meant to last B. The battery lid of the NH900 got colorless and the corners too, so I hope nothing of this happen to the HD5.p.s. pics to come Edited May 21, 2006 by Tiesto
Tiesto
I just came from a mall where I was testing the portability, HD5+MC40ELK+EX71 were the gear. It felt quite good in my pocket, it wasnt bulky nor heavy. I experienced a flawless playback. I didnt have to take it out from my pocket because with mc40elk I can do everything. I saw two persons wearing mini ipods clipped to thier belts, perhaps they think it's cool everyone else sees them well I think it's cooler wear the mc40elk to operate your hidden Sony player (add to that it's safer and easier). The mc40elk is a must accessory for the HD5; I have pics of the navy, menu and display screens. As I also have the mc38el so I tried as well but the results werent the expected, the display button only gives the elapsed and remaining time, there's no menu, the sound button is buggy it shows nothing but random characters or graphs (see picture), however the playback buttons work without problems. Richard_p
That is my favourite colour of HD5, if a faulty one ever comes up ebay i'd be tempted to buy it and slip my 30GB model in it's case Edited January 10, 2006 by Richard_p

Tiesto
Thanks for your comments, Im very happy with it. However it's a shame that the rm38el is half compatible, but I think that I wouldnt use it anyway (having the rm40elk) although Sony should do their player accessories totally compatible. mercury_in_flames
I might be imagining things..But today, I decided to listen to it while it was charging, and it seems LOUDER?? give it a try and let me know if its the same with yours. Also, it seems alot more responsive too, it navigates a lot faster, im definetly not imagining that.
Tiesto
I tested it as you said: with power adaptor the access it's quite fast although with the battery is ok, nothing to worry about. The level audio output seems the same both ways I tried with low and high volume I found no difference, however what I did notice it's that the output is lower than my MD units; for example: I use to adjust the volume on the NH900 to 15 higher than that it's too much for me but with the HD5 the volume bar has to be almost a quarter away from the top limit (it might be 23) too much difference, isnt it? Speaking of minidisc, what I reallly hate about the NH900 in HiMD mode is the load times and battery consumption. The HD5 is excellente at both, no matter the amount of songs the playback is instantaneous. On the other hand the HD5 (or rather SS) has one thing I didnt like at all. I transferred two songs twice by mistake then when I wanted to play the song back nothing happened, I skipped to next track and that was the song I wanted to listen therefore the HD5 had two files of the same track so I had to eliminate it with SS due to it cant be done directly, kinda bothersome, huh?
