McCol
Hi allFirst post here even though i registered almost 3 years ago! After almost 3 years of using various mp3 players i have decided to come back to the minidisc fold. I intend over the next couple of weeks to buy the MZ-RH1.I'd like to know if i am going to hear any benefits in using my portable headphone amp(Xin Supermini 3) with the line out on theminidisc player? at the moment it makes quite a big difference in SQ on my mp3 player but have been reading about the improved amp in the RH1 and was curious as to wether i will neeed my amp. greenmachine
I don't think using an external amp will result in significantly increased fidelity (if at all, a chain is only as strong as its weakest part), but give you a higher output, which is useful for not so sensitive headphones. What kind of headphones are you using?
The Low Volta
I have been testing a couple of portable amps with my RH1 (nothing as fancy/read expensive as the Xin supermini 3 though) and I would say that it really is only necessary if you need to drive inefficient phones (like the top Senn line or other big phones) but with my portable options (Senn PX100, Sony D66SL eggo) it doesn't make much difference in SQ (except for the slightly wider soundstage I guess due to decent power input) and you loose the advantage of the remote with its easier navigation and trackname/title... mostly I do not think it is worth it to buy one unless you need to driver big phoneswell, while I stand by my remark above, the situation can be slightly different, especially as you already have your amp. If you have some phones that are briliantly complimented by the amp's sound (I believe it is called synergy)as you can then use the amp as a sort of external eq (in the way that you can keep the RH1's (limited) eq flat or even use the normalisation function, which you can't combine with the eq-setting)... I must say that I am experiencing something like that and I'm currently listening/testing further and I will post a thorough review soon (keep an eye on the product review or maybe phones-section)
McCol
Thanks for the repliesI am using Altac Lansing im716 and Senn cx300 earphones. The AL716 need the amp with my current mp3 players to get any decent volume output but do give a lovely sound when amped.not to concerned if i dont see any improvement, will have a play around when i pick up the MZ-RH1, which hopefully will be in a couple of weeks.
