I bought a used MZ-NHF800 from twoheadedboy from a post on this board and it looks like I made a mistake buying it. The speed is off considerably. I have to set Time Warp to 83% in my sound editor to get the sound to match what I get with my camcorder. The camcorder matches my other camcorder exactly and my other MD exactly so I know it's the new HIMD that's off badly. I mean the other stuff matches to within half a second over an hour. This new HIMD is off by 4 minutes in half an hour.

Is there possibly a speed adjustment in the service mode or some other option I'm not thinking about? I bought this to record audio for my video projects and it's going to be a pain to have to convert everything I record before I can use it. If I don't get the ratio perfect I will still have problems. I believe I worked out the proper ratio but this shouldn't be necessary.

Any help would be appreciated.

Ok, since he is attempting to both libel and possibly defraud me, I feel obligated to respond here due to the first:

1) I never had this problem, and I have a recording with an alternate source archived on CD in unedited form to back it up. It should be easy to hear the problem without comparing it to another source however, because if it is off by as much as he claims, it would be readily apparent without comparison or analysis. If in doubt, you could even strum along with a standard concert-tuned guitar and tell that it doesn't match up.

2) He e-mails me one day out of the blue threatening to report me to paypal before attempting me to let me resolve the issue. I respond in less than 26 hours later asking for more details, and he provided me (slightly over 28 hours later) with a lot of technical information and demands that I let him return the item, but that I must refund his money first and to a paypal account using a completely different e-mail address (on a free email server instead of the e-mail address through his own website that he sent the payment from and has been emailing me through; though his website seems to be a front as well as he has no information about his "business" there other than an e-mail link and a small thumbnail of a house). Slightly less than 18 hours later, I got the paypal dispute notice in my e-mail; that's assuming there's no delay between a buyer filing it and the seller receiving notification. Even worse is that his last e-mail was sent at about 2:30pm my time, and I work 11:30am - 8pm and don't have access to my home e-mail from work. I stay up late doing work for my online college class, so I definitely was not even awake by 8:15am the next day when I received the dispute.

3) More detail pertaining to #1...he says it's off by 4 minutes per half hour (8 minutes per hour), which is a HUGE difference of 13.3% if fast or 11.8% if slow. However, his story keeps changing, because his e-mail says it's not a consistent amount, indicating via e-mail that another 30 minute track was off by 1 minute 47 seconds. It changed again in this post, because if it was really off by 4 minutes per half hour, a time stretching program would need to be set to 86.7% (fast) or 88.2% (slow), not 83%. I should add that he indicating it is slow, meaning a 30 minute, umm, "performance" nets a 34 minute file upon transfer. If you want to see how bad this is, take any soundfile you have and stretch it by 13.3% in your sound editor of choice...it will sound horrendously slow!

Since he is taking it to the forums and filed a dispute with paypal, I will respond to him here with the same resolution I will propose to paypal once I am advised on how to do that, as I have closed my paypal account after his hasty warning (see http://www.paypalsucks.com to see what happens to your bank accounts when a seller has a dispute filed, whether valid or no...I can't afford to have money in my bank account frozen as I sold this unit from a position of financial hardship in the first place)...we did not agree on any sort of return policy, I believe the unit is functioning properly and within accepted tolerances (the unit is an NHF-800 and is therefore not a pro deck with timecode, if such an animal in the Hi-MD world exists) and am unmoved by his claims that the unit is faulty, and further I sold it to him in good faith that this is the case. He did not ask for any test recordings before the sale, though I would have provided if asked. Him asking for a return on this is akin to trying to return clothes to a garage sale the next day, doesn't work that way. Nevertheless, if he is willing to send it in to a Sony authorized technician and it is found to be faulty, I will reimburse him for the costs associated with shipment and repair if official invoices are provided, not copies. This was not sold as a "new in box" unit, and the price charged definitely reflects that (far below even the clearance prices charged for this unit when factoring in the number of used and new regular and Hi-MD disks included), therefore there is no warranty through me in reality or implied. If that is not acceptable, then he can try to sell it to someone else whose needs may not be as discerning as his.

First Chris you didn't believe a word I said so why wouldn't I go to Paypal? You had to know this MD was defective. You're right it is obvious. Yet you still claim it isn't. Why? So you can keep my money. That's why. I gave you plenty of time to respond. You didn't. You answered my posts very quickly when you were selling me the MD. Yet it was several days before I actually went to Paypal over you and that was more about your attitude.

You haven't heard one word I've said. Either you aren't capable of understanding plain English or you just refuse to believe me. We both know it's the second. Despite my posting of proof you still deny it has a problem.

You come back with some smoke and mirrors crap about fake web sites. Yeah fotop.com is a real weird site. I ask anyone to check it out. They host photos. Wow that's weird stuff. (sarcasm intended) Then you go on about me using a different email address. Earth to chris. I didn't have my web site address when I signed up for Paypal. Sheeesh what a bunch of crap.

Here's the facts. The MD is off by as much as 8 minutes an hour. That's far from being in the realm of proper. You had to know this but you refuse to admit it. I can prove it easily to anyone. My other MD's don't have this problem. They are both dead accurate. Neither is off more than 1/29th of a second in an hour. Yours is off 8 minutes. That's seriously flawed. The more you deny that fact the more you just prove you have no intention of making it right. I'll let people judge you based on that.

I'll let anyone test this MD that isn't you. You would never send me the MD back or my money. I can make it work if I must by using Time Warp in Goldwave. But that's a giant pain.

I trusted you. You make up stupid reasons not to trust me. How many of us use the exact same email address all the time. Have you ever heard of switching ISP's? Don't you ever use any other address? If I set it up so I can use my web site address will you send me the money?

The bottom line is you don't want to believe me because you are hard up for the money. You just don't want to do the right thing. You make up crap reasons not to believe me based on what? You really think I wanted to borrow your MD for a week? Get serious. You can check my commitment to what I'm doing easily by checking Camcorder Info or Panasonic 3CCD. I post on both boards every day. I have a video business. I don't need to borrow a MD. I need to buy one that works. I guess I'll have to buy another one. Yours sucks.

BTW truth is a defense against libel. But libel is what newspapers do. Ordinary people slander. Truth is a defense against both. I'll be glad to prove the truth of my claim in court. It's easy except when people won't listen.

Anyone can check the screen captures I posted on that spooky weird site fotop.com. I even used my screen name there like I do all over the net. You can check my character anywhere but you won't. You don't want to. You can check my screen captures at http://www.fotop.net/KingGhidora/MD_problem

Click on each photo to see it closer. They show the overall file in Sony Vegas, the start where I synced the files and the end where they are seriously out of sync. That's proof chris. But go ahead and ignore it. I know you will. You've made that obvious.

While you're at it check out the photos of me and my kids and my dog at http://www.fotop.net/KingGhidora. Yeah that's real sinister stuff there.
