Uploading Files Recorded on other Non-HI-MD recorders

Is it possible using a unit like the Sony MZM100 to upload files recorded on an older non-HI unit? I have an older recorder, and for field recording it would be handy to use that capability if I purchase a Sony MZM100.

Thanks in advance.

Tom

Unfortunately, not with an MZM100. The files will appear in the uploading software, but they won't upload.

But the MZ-RH1 (or MZM200) definitely will upload non-Hi-MD files, as long as they weren't previously downloaded via Net-MD. Just this morning I uploaded 5 MDLP discs to SonicStage, and then copied them to a Hi-MD 1GB disc.

Thanks for the quick reply.

What is the difference in the 100 that will not allow it to upload the non-HD? I've found a great deal on this unit and am considering biting on it.

I would typically use it as a confidence backup recorder for videotaped events, like weddings or stage productions, and wanted to use the older MD recorder, I can't recall the model number offhand, to record a second source, like the output from a PA system. I would then transfer the files into my video editng program to use for editing the final piece.

I do that now, but I need to use the sound card for analog transfer. The fast upload would definately be a better way to go.

I'll see if the 200 or the RH1 is available for as good a deal.

Thanks again.

IIRC the M100 is the same as the RH10 but comes with mac software and a mic. Who knows why only the RH1 uploads standard MDs. If you think uploading realtime via analogue is ok, and the price is really attractive for the M100, then go for it. You can always get the RH1 in the future. But if you don't want to spend more money then I suggest getting the RH1 for its uploading capabilities.

When it was introduced, the Mac compatibility raised the price by something like $100. Do you need Mac compatibility?

Those Browser pages have good information on all units. But many people were extremely disappointed with the RH10.

It is extremely unlikely that units before the RH1 will ever be able to upload legacy MD formats. Sony always claimed it was a hardware limitation, not something that could be remedied with software. Certainly the SonicStage 3.4 and 4.x software that allow the RH1 to upload the old MD formats do not allow that uploading with other units.

You don't need the MZ-M200. Unlike the M100 vs. the RH10, the only difference between the M200 and the RH1 is that there's a mediocre Sony microphone (DS70P) in the bundle. The RH1 is already Mac compatible. Of course, if there's an MZ-M200 at a price lower than the RH1, grab it, and you can sell the mic.

What about the MZ-M10. Sorry to be asking about the different models, but I haven't even looked at MiniDiscs for a number of years, having gotten fed up with the ridiculous Check-in Check-out nonsense.

This forum has been a wealth of information.

Thanks again.
