1kyle
I see that Sony are releasing some Car Radio units with USB Any idea if the USB will be compatable with HI-MD --if so this would be a great alternatitive to finding radios with AUX in .I currently have a Kenwood older unit with MDLP but a nice NEW Radio with a comapatble USB connector would be great. It would have to be a SONY I suppose as it would need to be able to convert the ATRAC(3) files .The sales "Spiel" on this one says it does play ATRAC but usually knowing the basic ignorance in a lot of sales staff it would be great to know if anybody on this Forum has tried one of these (or similar).http://www.pixmania.co.uk/uk/uk/524760/art....html?srcid=867Cheers-K
Sparky191
HiMD's aren't UMS compliant. So music you can play on your HiMD, won't be seen on the Car unit. Music you can see on the car unit can't be played by the HiMD unit. I guess you could keep a HiMD disc as a data disk and use that. Arguably it would almost be cheaper and neater to buy a 1GB/2GB flash stick. However I could stick my USB Samsung MP3 stick into and it would work perfectly. So thanks for the link. So thanks for the link.I've got a 2GB LEXAR unit that I got Free with a set of Bose Cans I bought recently so this should work too. I was hoping that the MD recorder would just plug straight in being a SONY product. It DOES have a rear AUX in -- why on earth are these AUX IN's always invariably at the rear.It can be attached to a MD changer (according to the spec) so it still seems strange that it wouldn't play MD via a USB - especially being SONY gear. However probably being SONY the left hand doesn't know what the right hand is doing.OT however. OK it's around 2,000 GBP but the new Sony Laptop with Blu Ray dvd writer and HDMI output is Magnificent and does GENUINE 1080p as well. SKY HD is only good currently at 720p (still infintely superior to current TV standars).Gotta have one --now my 6 numbers had better come up this week as that's the only way I'm going to be able to snag one of these --Sony still ocasionally produce world beating products.Cheers-K Edited February 13, 2007 by 1kyle
Sparky191
You know more about this stuff than I do 1kyle. But I'd assume that you'd need a very specific control interface between the MD changer and the head unit. That wouldn't exist with a standard USB port. Of course its technically possible to do it, (ala SS and HiMD) but realistically its unlike Sony have. If they had they'd be making a song and dance about the feature. IMOBTW assuming you have an ATRAC library (which I don't) how do you use SS to put ATRAC tracks on a USB stick? Maybe you can drag and drop from SS to an explorer window? or would you just use explorer only?
greenk
Hi,I've just bought a CDX GT410U with usb and front input jack. It plays ATRAC CD's written by SS and WMA and MP3 on a Kingston 1 G usb stick fine, but does not recognise my HiMD NH1 thru the usb. I have tried to copy Atrac files to the usb stick but they are not recognised. The manual claims that Atrac audio devices will be recognised but i do not have one to try. Does anyone have suggestions for playing Atrac thru usb? Thanks and regardsKevin
big_raji
I also just purchased the CDX-GT410U hoping my nh900 would work through the USB port. No luck. The MD says "PC -- MD" but the car stereo says "USB Device not recognized"I was extremely disappointed, since the xplodsony site said that it worked with all "Sony Walkman devices with USB support" so I assume it will work with Sony devices like these:As well as any USB devices that support drag'n'drop of audio files as a standard USB removable storage. Syrius
http://www.century.co.jp/products/suto/cdiu2.htmlI use this baby in conjuction with a laptop HDD (Formatted in FAT32). No external power required, as my PS2 can make it run via the USB ports. A desktop HDD would require external power, though.

Syrius
No, but those head units should detect the HDD as just another data storage device and read and play music files off it.

Which was I was angling towards.
big_raji
Tried out a laptop HD (with my MP3s nested several layers deep in subdirectories) in a USB enclosure with my CDX-GT410u and it worked fine when powered externally. The HD enclosure uses two USB cables, one for data and one for power. I tried plugging both USB cables into a mini-hub and plugging the hub into the deck, but the deck showed the error "USB HUB NOT SUPPORTED"In short, here's a list of working and non-working devices with the head unit:Working:USB Flash Drive (1gb, 2gb, and 4gb tested)USB/SD Adapter (1gb tested)Benq MP3 Player (with USB to Mini-USB cable)Sony Camera (!) (with USB to Mini-USB cable)USB HD (if powered externally) (40gb tested)Not Working:Sony MiniDisc Players (NH600D, NH900 tested by me, NH1 tested by another poster)USB Hub or any devices with a built-in HubAudiovox SMT5600 Windows Smartphone (with USB to Mini-USB cable) Edited March 20, 2007 by big_raji
