NWHD5 SP SET on/off troubles

I purchased the NWHD5 in the U.S. I went into the service menu and turned on the SP SET to limit the audio level when using earbuds (shure E5C).

I am now using headphones. When I turn the SP SET to off and reboot the player it is still not at the audio levels it used to be.

The frustraing thing is though that now when I am actually in the service menu it plays nice and loud in the head phones, but when I leave the service menu it turns the volume back down whether I have set the SP Set to on or off.

I tried sonys help folks to no avail and the repair fee is a flat rate $107!

You know I've never dealt with this problem first hand but I do remember reading about something very similar...

What you have to do, as I recall reading, is set the unit first to a different region (which allows the higher volume) like the US or whatever. Then save that and exit service mode. Then go back in and do the SP set and it should stick thereafter.

you have to make sure it does the final bit properly. So do everything EXACTLY as it says in the pic in the above post, and it will work. let someone else try it if you dont seem to be able to get it?
