I believe that the US adapter is going to be 120V only, unfortunately. I don't know why Sony does that because the adapters for other countries are universal voltage and carry the same or similar model numbers but differ in their plug pins and the fact that they are universal voltage.

I believe the adapter is the AC-ES608K or something? The US ones I've seen are 120V only and the UK ones I've seen (for example) have UK prongs but are 100V-240V AC input capable.

To be sure about your particular adapter, look on the adapter itself... It should have a line that says "INPUT". There it is either going to say 120V AC or it will say 100V-240V AC. If it is the former then you do not have a universal voltage adapter and will need a voltage converter; if it is the latter it can use any voltage provided you adapt the plug to fit.

could i just use the USB adaptor to charge the mp3 player? because the usb is standard across the world right?

no big deal to charge it somewhere else?

You can charge your unit with USB but it will take about 6-7 hours to charge it fully (Depends upon how much battery was depleted ).Charging the unit with A/c adapter is very quick i.

does anyone know the wattage of the HD5, if it is less than 50 Watts, i think i can use one of those voltage convereters.

thanks

50W??? You're joking right? LOL. Way less than that. From the AC the adapter is around 7W, should say right on the adapter as well, right where the input voltage is it will say the power consumption as well.
