cornreaper
Sorry in advance if this post is not in the right section, but I couldn't find one that dealt with batteries. Anyway, I ordered a new Sony NH-14WM from Minidisc Canada, and I got it today. I inserted it into my Sharp MT-877 as I would with any other NI-MH gumstick, to charge it up. All seemed to be going well, when about 3 hours later, I heard a "pop" sound. I didn't really know what it was, and I thought nothing of it until it indicated that the battery was charged. After removing the unit from the charging cradle, i noticed that it had a bulge in it where the battery was. To make a long story short, I couldn't get the battery out without partially disassembling the recorder, because it had "exploded", but not leaked...it just "puffed-up". I don't get it....is this just a fluke defect, or did I somehow screw up something as simple as attempting to charge a battery?!?
Richard
That looks like a dodgy battery indeed. Did it come in offical sony packaging as it looks somewhat suspicious if you ask me.* Moved to Technical section
greenmachine
A guess: The battery was still partially charged before having started another charging process. Older MD models don't have a "smart battery full" detection, but stop charging after a fixed time interval (timed charging). It is easy to overcharge if you're not careful, which is what I suspect happened here. Ni-MH batteries should be in a close to empty state before attempting any charging process, particularly if there's no smart detection as with later Sony models. Superbaldguy
This is yet another reason whay I despise charging cradles, it's best to invest in a wall charger. You were lucky you could remove the overcharged gum without dissecting your MT877. If this wasn't an MDC purchase, I'd say you may have got a fake. cornreaper
Well, the packaging was Japanese but seemed authentic, but I was under the impression that Minidisc Canada was a reputable dealer. I'll be getting in touch with them today. What's funny is the battery still works in its swollen state. And luckily, the recorder has suffered no ill effects, just a very slight warp where the battery expanded. Thanks for your input!
