Andrej
Does anyone else have a Yamaha deck? Mine is MDX-E300 - a very small and beautiful unit. I like it a lot although i don't have the other parts of PianoCraft. Can anyone compare Yamaha MD sound with sound of Sony decks? What do you think about the ATRAC version in Yamaha decks? THIS SUCKS
i never heard one, i do know that sp type r is awesome!
Andrej
Actually I don't have much experiense with MD - bought my first portable (N510) in 2003. But compared with what I have ever had (N510, N505 and MZ-RH1) the sound of the deck is VERY comfortable. I don't know if it is a type R dsp - Yamaha mentiones the ATRAC for multitrackers and standard decks only and the last ones had 4.5... Does anybody know if Yamaha cooperated with SONY or SHARP constructing their MD units? Considering mentioning of ATRAC 4.5 it must be a SONY inside of Yamaha, but the sound is somehow different to be compared with my SONY porstables (RH1 is certainly much better then N510).By the way (off topic) just learned about a new Yamaha CD recorder CDR-HD1500 with a HDD. It can record from analogue sources as PCM only and there are some interesting copy right restrictions. I'm waiting for DENON 103 jukebox to compare which one to chose. Denon is more computer friendly but can not record from analogue. Is there anybody experienced with jukeboxes? Andrej
Sony also has quite a line of HDD jukeboxes... Onkyo as well. Some of them even include MD/MDLP slots There's a thread around on this forum on this. >> MDCF SearchI don't mean bookshelves but HI-FI decks available in Europe... At the moment I found those 2 (Denon and Yamaha) only.

What do you think about the ATRAC version in Yamaha decks? For what it's worth, I still use a Yamaha MD8 deck. It does for me, even though a bit dated now. I use it mainly for mixing down to the computer, but if I need to use a MD unit, I have a Sony MDS-JB920. The sound is good from both, and I would have great difficulty in hearing any difference between the two units. The specs of the Yamaha don't mention which version of Atrac is used, so I can't comment, but it's still a good sound

One more Yamaha-owner:) How old is your MD8? How do you upload the mixes from it? Is it easier to make mixes on MD8 or it is just a habit of yours? I can't mix on anything but computer - just not enough patience to mix realtime from several sources. One more question - have you ever had experience contacting Yamaha's service center? Andrej
Onkyo has the HDC-1.0, & Sony the NAC-HD1. Both decks, not all-in-one bookshelves units, although the HDC-1.0 is bookshelf size.I like the Onkyo best as it is most versatile. Well, it is a computer loaded with Vista. Sports 24bit/96kHz HD sound management, line in, burns to DVD-R/-RW/-RAM, line out, optical out, 2 front USB 2.0, 4 rear USB 2.0 ports, DVI-D video out, LAN link, IEEE1394 link, super-silent cooling & vibration-proof.Thank you! I haven't heard about these units before. $300 for a Sony seems fair, but it seems you can not upload from it and the burned CDs are ATRAC only? Is there any internet source offering these units in Europe? How much is HDC-1.0? Do you have it?Yamaha 1500 seems to be quite the same as Sony NAC-HD1, but burns in PCM, no uploading, so you have to burm a CD to copy it to computer for editing... Well, there is possibility to take out the HDD from the unit (special door on ther rear side), to put it connect it to a computer, but it is not so easy to use after each session. From Denon you can upload easily, but without analogue and optical inputs you can not decord directly with the unit...

I can't mix on anything but computer - just not enough patience to mix realtime from several sources. One more question - have you ever had experience contacting Yamaha's service center?I guess the MD8 is about 3 yrs old now. If I'm recording on it, I mix down to 2 tracks, and upload to a software editor for final tweaking of the audio, but if I've recorded more than 2 tracks on the MD8 it has to be an analogue connection. If I only use 2 track recording on the MD8, I can use the Data minidisc from the MD8 in the Sony JB920 minidisc deck. and upload to computer in the digital domain.I have difficulty getting my head round Audio/MIDI sequencing, so prefer the MD8 for multi track recording, and use the 2 tracks from MD8 as the master track in the software sequencer, to add MIDI to it, if needed, from a keyboard controller, though I could add analogue signals from the MIDI keyboard to the MD8I use the Mac platform, with Bias Peak as the Audio Editor and Metro as the Audio/MIDI sequencer.wrt Yamaha service. I've never used it, but if I've needed help, I ask on the Yamaha forums, where, as usual with discussion forums, you might get a speedier and more satisfactory response from users of the equipment. Andrej
Check out this....http://stuff.tv/news/id-6165/default.aspxhttp://www.engadget.com/photos/sonys-giga-...r-music/197158/Thanks for the link. It looks nice, but I hope to find something like a deck. One more thing I wish in a juckebox-deck is that is has to be independalble from PC or TV-set but with possibility to connect a PC for downloading/uploading. At the moment none of the units offers everything in one...
kino170878
If you go to the second link, you can see a picture of the deck version by clicking on next picture a few times. NAC-HD1E with hard disc capacity is 250gb but the price is around £700. I believe you can just hook up a PC via the usb socket or even through a network with wireless connection, and transfer over your music folders to the unit's harddrive and vice versa. But I am suspicious of it being Sony.....research into it more and find out for yourself.Manual is here http://80.88.32.114/manuals/manuals.aspx?l=en Edited July 4, 2007 by kino170878

Manual is here http://80.88.32.114/manuals/manuals.aspx?l=enThis is exactly what I need if everything is so as described in the quick guide! The prise is a little bit disappointing... Probably in a year a similar item for 800-900 EURO could be expected - then it would be OK. Thank you very much!PC with USB or optical connection to an amp is not the same as a separate unit to me. I prefer an audio component and not a PC even if the price is almost the same. Edited July 5, 2007 by Andrej

This two decks (and also the MDX-596 and MDX-793) use MD mechanisms manufactured by Sharp. Mounted to the mechanism is a printed circuit board with the entire mechanism control and digital audio section of the deck, also manufactured by Sharp and using Sharp ATRAC chips. The only audio electronics in these decks contributed by Yamaha is the analog and ADC/DAC section. In my opinion, both the MDX-9 and the MDX-595 sound very good, differences to the source is hardly audible. Furthermore, the workmanship of the Yamaha Decks (especiallly the MDX-9) is far better the that of the (non-ES series) Sony Decks.Dirk

I never dared to open my Yamaha MDX-E300 deck although I disassembled and assembled portable units Sony 505 and 510 without demaging them . Somehow it seems dangerous to do that without service manual. Is there any source for Yamaha's service manuals?

Somehow it seems dangerous to do that without service manual. Is there any source for Yamaha's service manuals?Hi,as far as I remember, the MDX-E300 is technically similar to the MDX-M5. I repaired such an unit some time ago, it had a different MD mechanism than the two decks I mentioned above.I never managed to get any service manual for a Yamaha MD deck as pdf file, I only own a paper copy of the MDX-9 service manual. You can obtain these manuals at www.schaltungsdienst.de, prices are around 15 €.Greets,Dirk
