i was erasing some unneeded tracks and all of a sudden it just said "cannot record or play." the only thing i seem to get now is the option to erase the whole disc, but i don't want to. is there a way to get out of this? thanks.

for the techies here that could help , they will need the Model of MD that you have and a bit of extra info ( How long you have had it , buy it used or new, How much abuse it has taken ) stuff like that .

it's a sony minidisc MZ-RH10 that i bought new about a year ago. i haven't abused it, i don't think (never dropped it or tried anything fancy...). i always do the same things with it: listen, record, erase. i actually never really learned how to use it beyond this extent.

when you say listen record erase , does that mean you use the same disc repeatedly ?

The disc information can get scattered over time and the header file become unreadable, when that happens you have to format the disc , and that restores the index files but erases everything else .

u probably already done this, but did u try another disc?

no. the only disc i have is the one that came with the minidisc player. it's possible that the machine is fine, and the disc might also be okay if i just erase it and start all over. the problem is that there is a live performance on there that i don't want to erase if possible.

yes, i've been rerecording the same disc all this time. so i guess there's no option but to erase the disc?

i had wanted to transfer files to my computer. then erasing the disc would have been fine, only the software doesn't work with my mac so i was never able to do that.

This is a known problem with the RH10 (and maybe others):

If you have one long track and place track marks around a small section inside the track, delete the trackmarked section, and then combine... You will end up with a trashed disc saying "Cannot Record or Play". There is also the possibility that any extensive editing on the unit may cause this error.

This was mentioned some time ago, and I was able to reproduce the problem on my RH10 as well. Not a very friendly bug, as it trashes your entire disc.

One possible fix that was mentioned is to press "Stop" after each consecutive edit (trackmarks [stop], delete [stop], combine [stop], etc) allowing the unit to write the system file after each edit. Supposedly this is a workaround that avoids the "Cannot Record or Play", although I haven't tried it myself. The easiest way is to upload the entire recording untouched and do your editing on the PC.

Also, the RH10 cannot upload files to a Mac.

However you can use the newest Mac software (available in the downloads section here in the forums) to transfer Mp3 and WAV files to your RH10.

Hi-MD recorders that can upload to Mac are:

MZ-M10 - http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-M10+RH910.html

MZ-M100 - http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-M100+RH10.html

MZ-RH1 - http://www.minidisc.org/part_Sony_MZ-RH1.html

The MZ-M10 and M100 are essentially the same as the RH910 and your RH10, they just added the Mac upload functionality and they come bundled with microphones I believe.

thanks for your help-

Hey Biggirl . I am on a Macbook Pro core2duo and have the RH1 with MD Transfer 2.0

You wont be able to upload discs the arent in HiMD mode , if you do a recording in Standard Mode , You will have to record into the soundcard line input , but if you record in HiMD mode then you will be able to Upload .

It is a Shame that the RH10 wont do that , and I appriciate someone verifying the "Bug" llets me know what to watch out for if I get a 10.

The RH-10 is definitely a problematic machine.

Mine had this strange bug that I listened to an MP3 Hi-MD for a while, then I switched for another Hi-MD and recorded tracks on it. Then at the end of the recoding, it wrote the system file, and I got a "cannot record or play" error. My while disk was trashed. I looked further and realized that the RH-10 had actually overwritten the tracklist file with the one from the Hi-MD just before. Of course, nothing was consistent with the existing maclist file on the Hi-MD any more, thus the trashed recording. Furthermore, it did the same during some experiments a couple of hours later.

I also had this strange bug that once, I was listening to music, and I bumped it on a table (it slipped my hand). after that, the track I was listening to would not play any more - instead, it would scroll through the whole track at high speed. I think somebody had this one too somewhere else in this forum.

Anyway, now I won't record with this RH-10 any more - too many problems reported from other people. I was really fond of the RH-10, but now I think it is only good to play tracks from write-protected MDs. This unit seems to damage much too many MDs to be trusted.
