Sony_Fan
For some reason I can't back up my personal data with my dvd burner, so i'm turning to my Hi-MD unit to back up data on 1GB discs. My question is, how reliable would this be? I don't want to lose my data. I'm looking to back up about 2.5 GB so i'll be using 3 of the 1GB discs. Sparky191
Very reliable. If slow. Also you'd probably need to have more than one HiMD unit in case one fails. As with all backups, have more than one copy of the same data.
raintheory
I have a feeling that Hi-MD discs will outlive the recorders in the long run, so I wouldn't use them for archival purposes. As a somewhat temporary storage medium (before your unit breaks down) they are fantastic but slow, as stated.

Faster data transfer, better compatibility, reliable enough, and no wear and tear on your precious HiMD unit.
Sparky191
I think the inference was why not fix the DVD problem.
poe
My DVD burner died do to some remote nonhelp from HP. MY HIMD saved all my important data and let me do the system recovery HP demanded I do before they would honor their waranty. Saved my butt. Sparky191
right, as if I, of all people, would promote near options, using DVDs... ...did I pull your finger there?!I have no idea what you're on about.
pata2001
I think the inference was why not fix the DVD problem.Exactly. Go to almost any stores that sell computer electronics and you'll probably find a DVD burner for cheap. Try finding another HiMD unit if yours break down due to wear and tear transferring gigabytes of data.
Sparky191
IMO don't rely on just one medium.
garcou
IMO don't rely on just one medium.I archiv my family photos on both DVD and HimD ( 1 per year). For my work , I save 3 times: 1 on PC an 2 on 2 different md ( I synchronize the 3 with "alwayssync.exe" software, freeware). DVD/CD are not convenient for dayly update.
Sony_Fan
I think the inference was why not fix the DVD problem.I did fix it, so I don't have to use Hi-MD for storage anymore. Just nice to know that if I ever do need to use it, it's there. But my RH10/M200 is mostly for music playback. Screw the iPod!
