Im going to see a ( very well know scottish) comedian on friday and want to record his set.Everytime ive tried to record stand up before its been hard to make things out,is this simply down to my levels being too low.I dont havr the best seats so will be a good way back,im only guessing maybe 50 ft or so.Should i just crank my level right up and hope for the best??.

If your just looking for the material and not a perfect recording , since it is voice use the AGC , if you are using an RH1 you have a couple different flavors of AGC . The Mic AGC can be set for Music or Voice .

If it is fairly loud ,Mic sensitvity Low , AGC on . you might be surprised.

Im using a sony mz-nh700 and a sony ecm-719 mic.Would the voice modeon this mic really make any great difference for this kind of thing.I always record hi-sp mode for all recordings i make,so will this be recorded the same as others, unless there is a better way.

for the rec order the voice mode would make the difference , but the Mic your using , is ....... well ..... an off the shelf low level mic . the 719 is just basically a clip on for close range , and low quality , it isnt made for a big hall .

You have to know what to expect from things , You cant expect a VW Bettle , to run in an F1 race .

A lot of times people will by a mic , just think about it being a Micrphone , and therefore should capture sound. But each type of Mic has different sensitivity, Noise Level , Frequency response , Polar Pattern , Impedance , Output level and Power requirement . All of these things will determine how well a mic will operate with a particular piece of equipment .

The MD itself has a Nice Mic preamp , and the Nicer the mic, ( designed for MD mind you) then , the more of what the MD is capable of will be revealed.

i realise the mic im using probably isnt the best...if there is such a thing. Its done well as far as recording( very loud) concerts, although it lacks on bass quite a bit ive always been happy.I have a pair of sp-bmc 2 mics also,so i may use them instead to see how it turns out.If i use the 719 i might just use the voice mode and see how it goes.

Voice mode will limit the Bass even further , but will result in a cleaner recording for that mic , there is a slight bit of attenuation of level , and a broader attenuation of Frequency , both the Highs, and lows will be trimmed.

The ECM719 is a cardioid microphone, which is directional. That's good--it should help you isolate the comic from the laughter and other audience noise all around you. Put it in Voice mode to have it also ignore things like foot-stomping and high screams. Voice is a relatively narrow band of frequencies, so it will help you to set it for that mode.

The BMC-2 are omni-directional and have a wider frequency response, which makes them better for music (with a battery module and line-in). But for a comedy show I'd use the EMC719 and AGC. Put it up as high as you can without getting noticed. If you have it too hidden, it may be getting muffled by people in front of you.

And are you sure the unintelligibility doesn't have something to do with that Scottish accent.....
