What model was your previous unit?

What happens with an already completely blank disk? Maybe you need first to separate reading from writing.

If you haven't a completely blank disk, perhaps you can try another disk that you haven't used since well before the other machine died? Just to see if it will read.

I assume you are not connecting it to USB, obviously that comes later.

Hi thanks for your advices, and quick answers. My previous unit was also a N1 ,i was listnening some music and it just died suddenly ,i nerver manage to put it alive again .

I then decided to buy the same one .But the ebay unit is not working as well ,i tried your advice with a blank disc i can enter in record mode but it won't save the recording and i can hear the player "chewing" to try to read or record, but nothing happend only Busy shows on the display .Itried to connect via usb ,sonic stage recognize the player when a disc isn't inserted ,but with a disc it doesn't seems to find it.

Thanks for your help .

Someone sold you a dud, I fear.

Maybe the battery was a problem with the old unit. While you have a fully charged battery from the one you are doubtless going to return, try putting that battery in the old unit. If it works, then the charging circuit sprang a leak. Worst case, if so, is a few bucks for a wall charger.

However whether or not it works, inspect the old machine for green guck on the battery terminals, of course on the battery too. Buy some 100% isopropanol (from local drugstore, avoid chlorinated cleaning agents they may take paint off, isopropanol will not), and using a Qtip and or cotton wool, try to clean everything. You may be surprised. Also rubbing with a little steel wool on the exposed "+" terminal of the battery itself doesn't hurt - I got a "brand new" battery with this defect last week, easily fixed.

My guess is power problems on the old unit, and a dead write head on the new one (the latter is DEFINITELY not worth fixing). I have never owned an N1, so to some extent I am guessing - old hands here may have better advice.
