What microphone to use?

I have a couple of minidisc recorders that I use to record some local bands that I know play. Some Hi-MD (MZ-RH910 & MZ-NH900) and some MDLP (MZ-R700). I have a Sony ECM-MS907 and a Sony ECM-MS957 which I have recorded with about 6 or so times. Not bad recordings but I still want better quality, if possible. As far as mic placement goes, I usually put the mics on a mic stand right by the soundboard (if possible) or in the center of the room. I test it out with my ears before I setup the mics.

I've been reading stuff on these forums about the Audio Technica AT822. Would that be a good mic for recording a rock band? Or is there something else that would be better? I saw that Sony makes a 957PRO. I like the sound of the ECM-MS957 but it doesn't do a great job of recording bass or lower tones while the ECM-MS907 does, but it doesn't do a great job of recording higher tones. I don't have many complaints about either microphone but I would like something better.

I don't really want to spend a fortune on anything either because it's just a hobby and my work schedule and/or girlfriend could affect my future with this hobby.

Any suggestions from anybody would be nice. Thanks.
