Newcastle United
Hi, Unfortunately I didnt realize that my mic sens was set to standard instead of for loud music when recording a rock band recently. This has produced a greatly overloaded recording with tons of distortion. Does anyone know how to try and make the recording listenable again either via eq or some computer software? thanks It was recorded in LP2
A440
Sorry to say, but it can't be done. The good information is buried under the distortion. Bwil
Adobe Audition has a filter called Clip Restoration which lowers the amplitude and tries to reconstruct the flattened peaks. It works pretty well up to a point, but may not fix that kind of distortion.
sfbp
For the future, the very best way (IMO) to deal with this problem is to underrecord, using the highest data rate available (PCM with HiMD comes to mind - LP2 will never be any use if you have to manipulate the signal because it's already significantly compressed, SP is not bad at all!). Then you can amplify without getting something horribly clipped, where the sound was too quiet. Don't overdo it though, you need a decent amplitude to begin with, nothing => nothing. Others (here) may have a more sophisticated approach.
Newcastle United
Thanks for the helpful suggestions above. I will certainly look out for that computer program, as for recording in LP2 I have to as most are stealth recordings. When I am allowed to record a band I still use my Revox reel to reel !
