zzzuppp
I have a disc which has one track with a TOC error. I managed to delete all the other tracks, but I can't delete the offending track. I can still record onto the disc but during Playback anything in proximity to the TOC error track shows 'TOC error' and won't play. I've tried the disc in several machines - on an MZ RH-1, for example, it won't load at all but goes straight to the 'TOC error' message. Is there any way to wipe the disc or reformat it, or is it toast?
kgallen
Maybe doing a "TOC clone" from another "good" disc would free it up so it can be "reassessed" as a blank disc? I believe TOC cloning can be done on certain full-size machines (some deliberately, some by stealth!) but it depends what machines you have to hand. The minidisc.org listing for a machine will sometimes note such "capabilities" which seems to involve being able to eject a disc with "TOC dirty" in the machine RAM, and writing that TOC to a newly inserted disc. A dirty TOC would normally be written to disc before the machine will eject it, although this can differ on portables that have a clamshell chassis. New MDs can be had for around 3GBP, is this one worth the trouble? TOC cloning: http://minidisc.org/cloning_procedure.html
sfbp
I might be inclined to stick it in the microwave (joke). And yet your neighbour appears to be in the USA. What's up....?
zzzuppp
Indeed, I wondered whether it's worth the bother..but it's just more plastic in the ocean if I bin it. Other uses for dead MDs??? Had a look at the cloning procedure - looks complex, and I don't have any of those machines. Hmm, microwave, sounds like a laugh........but I don't have one. :-(
sfbp
Cloning is neither here nor there IMO. Did you try to format the disk? The microwave (that you don't have) will blow up if you put an MD in it. Don't. BTW, your best friend in absolutely cleaning off disks is a pre-NetMD device, either portable or deck. In addition a portable with a busted overwrite head will clean out the TOC immediately. Assuming there isn't a physical defect, of course. In which case, no way to remap. Floppy disks were ever thus. Remap the bad sectors but if it hit the FAT, you were dead in the water. kgallen
I'm in the world of SP/LP2/LP4 MDs - I've no experience of Hi-MD where maybe you go through a "format" stage similar to a floppy disk? In which case my TOC cloning comment is of course irrelevant, sorry!
