Sony has provided two consecutive versions of SonicStage CP in just less than a month. SonicStage CP 4.1 debuted alongside the new NW-S70x series on October 21, 2006 and now the latest addition, SonicStage CP 4.2 is available for public download.

New features:

★ Importing and playing back in HE-AAC format is available.

- Format;*.3gp/

- It doesn’t support a copyrighted file.

★ Ripping Audio CD in HE-AAC format is available.

- Format;3gp

- Bit rate; 96kbps/80kbps/64kbps/48kbps/40kbps

★ DSEE (Digital Sound Enhancement Engine) function is available. DSEE is a high-frequency completion technology developed by Sony that improves the quality of compressed audio and adds back in high frequencies that are often lost when audio is compressed. The resulting audio is closer to the original, more natural, and offers a wider sense of space.

why oh why must Sony use .3gp instead of MP4 container. :( HE-AAC support is good, which I thought Sony would go anyway. however, which Sony DAPs that actually support HE-AAC? Oh, and does Sony finally allow all Atrac3+ bitrates for AtracCD?

I updated, but SSCP 4.2 loads UI compnents, I get to see the black window werein the software should start and then it hangs itself.

any-one an idea what this could be?

SSCP 4.0 worked better.

but I hope I get it working, 'cause as you might know I'm a soundquality/enhancement freak, so I'm very, very curious about DSEE!!!!! :P

BTW..since ss 4.0 officially got renamed SSCP, isn't this SSCP 1.2 or something?

I updated now, but it plays only atrac files...my mp3 files won't play....why?

Hey onez - I had the same problem upgrading from 3.4 to 4.0. Eventually, I had to transcode all the MP3s that I couldn't re-rip or re-download, a less than ideal solution as it meant a drop in sound quality. My suggestions would be to look at the tags of your MP3s or, if you can, just re-rip the files. It's frustrating I know - unfortunately, I wasn't able to come up with a solution. I'm really curious to try this DSEE thing as well, but it's these reports of problems that make me very hesitant to upgrade.

Best of luck.

 I have just downloaded SonicstageCP 4.2, overwriting version 4.0. All goes well until, including database conversion. I then get the old chestnut of the program having an unrecoverable error, a la the old connect player. That used to be remedied by downloading a patch from microsoft, but in this case I've already covered that base. I have reverted back to CP 4.0, thanks to the full download from ATRACLife B) (Thanks).

Any ideas on how to overcome the problem? The new features look great (especially the HDEE (?) conversion for much better lossless conversion of audio files.) I think it would benefit my NW-A3000.

I want this software to suceed, as fighting it's corner against the great swathe of Ipod devotees is becoming harder with each bug/problem laden piece of software Sony releases.

Keep fighting the good cause.

  • 2 months later...

I have a Network Walkman Nw-HD5 for just over a year and have had no problems with it – at least not until just before Christmas when I suddenly couldn’t get the ‘load file’ command to work. Sonicstage just stopped working with an ‘Internal error’ message every time I tried to import one of the mp3 files on my hard disk..

So last week I upgraded to Sonicstage 4.2 thinking this would solve whatever the problem was. But I still have the same problem. The program crashes every time I try to import a file or a folder. I’ve tried removing ‘old’ files form my library and tried importing them again – all to no avail. And worse still, I can no longer register with the CDDB service. Just get the message ‘Socket open failed’. So I can no longer transfer any files to my NW-HD5 which renders it pretty useless!

Anyone know what’s gone wrong?

I spent all day moving files from Connect to New So**ing Useless Sonic Stage CP 4.2 as the transfer programme only moved 84 tracks. When I tried to load into my NW3000 it crashed it (error 32). Please please does anyone know how I can revive it?

From a tired and sad ex-Walkman fan
