NW-HD5 "Battery is Missing" error

Question

Hi all

This is a great forum and I have lurked here many times in the past, picking up tips for my HD5 and related stuff. Now I have a reason for posting my own query, I've checked the search function and cannot find anything for this, so apologies if it's a repost...

I've had my NW-HD5 for over a year, and in recent weeks it has started to display a "battery is missing" error and then shut off. When restarted it resumes play as normal most of the time. This fault is intermittent, and does not seem to occur for any reason - ie. the player has not been knocked etc.

The error suggests that the battery pickups/sensor are registering the fault, but has anyone else had this problem, or know a reason or solution for it?

Thanks in advance for any help!

Kind regards

Bill

Does it do this when connected to AC or does it do it when only powered by the battery? Because if it's the latter that's quite silly, lol. I mean how can it tell you the battery is missing if it has no battery power? LOL.

Might be a intermettent open in the battery contact(s) or with some wiring or solder joints in the player :( Or the battery might be defective somehow...

Thanks for the interest MDX-400. It only does this when on battery power - I agree it's a weird error message to give when the only juice is from the battery that it claims is not there!

As an update, I replaced the Sony battery with a generic compatible one and the problem has not recurred since then. Given this, I suspect that the original battery was faulty, which is disappointing seeing as it's only a little over a year old.

i am having this problem too recently, owned the hd5 since september 2005. Also, and this just started within the last two days, the screen will go completely dark. wondering if I should just get a new battery and see if this resolves the issue.

okay, found the spare battery I had (when I originally bought the hd5 and saw the cracks in the buttons took it back to the sony store for an exchange and "forgot" the battery and they didn't check), and haven't had the battery missing message appear since the switch.
