is PSP really getting a HDD?

Question

I know there are many rumours about the PSP getting a HDD.

But now it´s really looking like truth.

at a presentation from samsung in korea about their new N series 1.8´´ HDD products they gave a presentation.

in this presentation, you could see a PSP held by a woman with the title: ´´enjoy the movie, everywhere.´´

so this looks like the new PSP is really getting a Hardrive.

It still remains a rumour, since there´s no kind of official conformation.

not from sony, nor from samsung.

But I think PSP2 gets a HDD, from samsung.

- samsung allready supplies NAND flash mem and LCD screens for PSP.

- sony wants to launch video download service. doesn´t work real good with memorysticks.

- the world screams for a HDD in the PSP.

I think it´s just a matter of time before a PSP with HDD appears on the net.

I thought I´d share this with you guys. :)

I've read about this as well. A new PSP with HDD is definitely plausible if a redesign is actually in the workshop. But then with the advent of higher capacity Memory Stick PRO-HG Duo, I think the PSP will remain as it is with onslaught of new accessories in 2007. Instead, I think something completely new is in the works to complement the budding PlayStation Store. Either way, 2007 will usher in a new high capacity era for the PSP.

Ishi, that sounds a little too knowing to me ;) Here's a guess from PSP Fanboy:

"PSP Prediction #1: Sony will introduce a new portable addition to the PlayStation brand.

And it won't be a PSP redesign. In many ways, it will be exactly the same as the PSP: it will feature an upgradeable XMB that features Photos, Music and Videos. It will even be compatible with PSP accessories, such as the headset, GPS, and camera. Heck, it'll even play UMD movies. However, there's one thing it won't do: play games. The device will be set as a competitor to the iPod and will feature a portable hard drive. It'll be smaller than a PSP, feature a video-out, and will be compatible with a revamped PlayStation Store (see prediction #2)."

http://www.pspfanboy.com/2007/01/01/5-psp-...tions-for-2007/

This to me is the smartest thing I've heard so far - at least in terms of guesses - and, if it's released, I know one thing: I am really going to regret putting aside money for a Wii!

PSP Prediction #4: A future firmware upgrade will boost PSP speed to 333MHz.

Sony will finally unlock the PSP's full technical potential by allowing developers to use all 333HMz of PSP's processing power (the system currently is limited to 222MHz). Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas Stories will be among the first games released to take advantage of the upgrade

I will be very happy if this prediction is right .

I would predict onboard flash memory for any new version of the PSP, rather than a hard drive.

Hard drives use up battery faster than flash, and are more delicate than flash. Neither is a good idea for a handheld gaming device IMO. Flash has come down a great deal in price since last year.

The online "articles" I've read so far regarding future PSP models with hard drive sound like wishful thinking at best. At worst a rumour that weakens PSP sales, much like the previous rumour about an imminent price reduction (which was bogus).

On the other hand, a new device based on the PSP concept is entirely plausible.

Maybe a 2nd gen mylo? Anyway, putting HDD in a PSP is just not plausible. First, a PSP must have a UMD drive, since the games come in UMD. It won'r make sense to make a PSP without a UMD drive. So, imagine the bulkiness of both UMD drive and a HDD. As I said somewhere before, PSP is also driving the sales of memory sticks, so Sony would prefer people buy larger memory sticks than putting a HDD in the PSP. Unless if Sony want to kill UMD.

What I want is a higher res screen mylo (at least 640x480, 320x240 for web browsing is useless). Now, putting a HDD on the mylo might make sense, if Sony want it to be a portable multimedia player. But flash memory is reaching double digit GB capacity now, with 16+GB capacity.

Pata, I agree with these and your previous comments - although I think that Sony's successful Cybershot line contributes to memory stick sales significantly. I also think that 16GB just isn't enough for an audio/video device. I have less music than most people and my HD3 is completely full with music alone. Particularly if you want to tie it to a download store, tonnes of storage space is a necessity.

I suppose I posted this in the wrong thread - what excited me about this wasn't the idea of a PSP with a hard drive, but a 'Playstation Walkman' - a PSP-esque device with a 60-80GB drive in it. If it keeps all the other functions of the PSP, minus the UMD (i.e. games and UMD movies), I would think it would represent the first major competition to Apple.
