Question

Just treated myself to a new S706 - the display packed in on my A1000, and since I needed new headphones, I thought I would kill 2 birds with one stone!

The sound is great (the static hiss is bearable). However, i can't get over the transfer rate - it is absolutely woeful  . Having lived with MD, Hi-MD and a few HDD players this unit has the slowest transfer rate on any Sony device I have owned. I was actually expecting the opposite with a flash based player.

Anyone care to agree or disagree?

The static sound can be eliminated by turning off the screen saver (when ever the the screen saver pops thats when the static sound occurs).

The hissing sound can be significantly reduced by using other headphones, e.g. MDR-EX90 but then you will lose NC feature (most of the hissing sound is caused when the MDR-NC022 used). But the hissing sound is not really a problem once you are in a noisy area; it is really a problem in a quite environment though...

As for the transfer speed, yes I agree it is not fast. But considering it is 4gb player, I think it is ok but not great in transfer speed.

What really annoys me is that I have to use supplied extension cord which get heavy on left ear due to the connecting point. Since we don't have any remote use for MDR-NC022 I hope the cord is longer without using the extension cord. I think the headphone is shared with those newly launched external Noise Canceling devices; so probably this is why the cord is short and the extension cord is supplied.

The transfer rate can be slow, but this depends on the settings in SonicStage.

Could it be correctly assumed that the newest/newer version of SonicStage is being used to transfer audio to the NW-S706?

If this is the case then please check that the audio is not being converted. Change the codec when transferring audio to the Connect player (NW-S700/S600/E010/A800/ etc..) will decrease the transfer rate. Please ensure that "Convert to specific format" has not been selected in the transfer settings. Otherwise it will be very slow. Actually painfully slow.

If this is not the case. Then this seems quite strange. Could more information about the setting is SonicStage be provided?

I'm fully converant with the transfer settingsof SS - I have not changed the settings at all, it is just this unit is slower than all other ATRAC devices I have owned, where I was expecting it to be faster, if anything.

But hey, the music is on it now. :)
