Sonicstage and my HD NW5

Question

:sad:I had problems downloading music files to my Atrac device , HD NW5, from my sonic stage software on PC. I reinstalled or downloaded sonicstage 4.3 (previously 3.4). but then I got a message when I tried to connect to the 4. that I would have to delete all my tracks from my device because it is not the same sonicstage as when I uploaded the tracks. So not wanting to do that I reinstalled 3.4 , to my horror I get the same message.. So I will have to lose all 10gb of my music files on my player to be able to use sonicstage agin? Surely this cannot be correct? This is an absolute nightmare , Why do Sony make things so difficult. Can anyone help me get around this problem. :) Edited by sunnymarky

Upgrading form 3.4 to 4.3 should not cause such an error. During installation the software may offer you the choice to retain or remove your existing database. If you want to keep your existing music files you obviously choose to retain. If you have accidentally chosen to overwite then you may be in trouble even if you go back to 3.4. ( It's not easy to go backwards with SS so that may also be part of your problem).

You are not specific about your original issue which led you to upgrade. This may be the real cause of your problems. Can you elaborate a liitle?

I wanted to update from 3.4 to 4.3 because i was having problems transfer tracks to Device. I donot have the sonicstage disc only downloaded from internet software. I dont get any option to save files . When I connect my atrac device to sonicstage sofware I get the message about this version was not used with this device for File transfers. I used 3,4 when I transferred my files from software to device so that statement is incorrect. It does not give me any option now except to intialize the hard disk on my device or remove all the files from my device. I have a player that can never be used to upload again if I dont clear everything from my player.

It actually tells me that because I used a previous version of sonicstage software to transfer files to my player that I HAVE TO delete all the tracks from my player to use 4.3, around 10gb worth of music will be lost. If that aint bad software I dont know what is. Big mistake getting this player.

When you upgrade to 4.3 do you still have all your music within the SS library?

When you originally ripped your CD collection to your PC did you rip to the default SS folder or choose your own and what format did you use?

The point here is if you still have your music on the PC then you should be able to initialise your hard disk on the HD5 and just transfer the whole lot again. There is still the issue of why you had transfer problems to begin with; your data on the HD5 may be corrupt which would require a format anyway!!!!!!!!!!!

IBut why cant Sonicstage take it back from my player to a sonicstage library?

Because (for some inexplicable reason) in order to transfer files back from the player to SS library - the original files must still reside on the computer. I still don't understand why and I completely sympathise with you, because the same thing happened to me. Fortunately my collection was only 4GB and I did have a lot of that on CD. But until that point, I assumed (like you), that if the files were on my player, then I could just transfer them back to the library. I felt quite sick when I saw the error message pop up.

Once bitten twice shy - now I use the backup tool and save every last file to make absolutely sure it doesn't happen again. This doesn't help you at all, I know that - and I understand how frustrating and upsetting it is to realise you've lost your music for seemingly no good reason at all. Why wouldn't anyone assume that if the music is actually on their player, that they can transfer it back to the library? I really think a big warning should be stuck on the front page in capital letters stating:

"Danger - do not EVER delete files from the computer if you plan to transfer them back from the player as your music will be lost forever unless you still have the original files"

You are not the first person to have been stung by this and I'm sure you won't be the last. Sony need to sort this out. It's ridiculous that the repercussions of deleting files from the library once they're on the player are not made clearer. A lot of hearts will have sunk along in sympathy with you if that's any comfort

........and it is all down to DRM, something SONY really need to get a handle on if they are to remain in the DAP market. However, on balance DRM'd WMA and AAC files will give anybody the same grief, but SONY have ATRAC files protected beyond all sensibility. There is only one simple solution to your problem no matter what manufacturer of DAP you are using....

a/ Don't download DRM protected music, buy the CD instead ( it will always be yours to do whatever you like+ you get the cover art and lyrics).

b/ Rip in MP3 to your Windows music folder, so your music is there for any media player (Current and future) to use.

c/ Backup regularly ( check out Microsoft Synctoy)

d/ Don't be too annoyed, DRM is the nightmare of us all, you too have learned the hard way

BTW Don't ditch the HD5 in anger, it is an excellent DAP, and it's MP3 compatible unlike earlier Sony Players. B)

Good Luck. B)

Ok, But the worst part is that I cannot ever transfer any more music to my Player EVER unless I delete everything I have on it.. Why does the onscreen message tell me that the version of Sonicstage I am trying to use is not the same version as when I transferred the tracks..surely that should logically mean that if I used the SAME VERSION I used to originally transfer than it should work. It doesnt make sense. Nothing to do with DRM.

Probably because you re-installed 3.4 after installing 4.3. As i said before, SS doesn't like going backwards. Somewhere within the program ( and registry) traces of the 4.3 installation are lurking to mess with you, and all of this IS to do with DRM. Sony spend more time and money securing Digital Rights than they do on making the software usable to the average person. It is proving to be instrumental in their undoing........as you have discovered.

I may be wrong ( help from anyone please!!!) but you will probably have to start again.

What about this ......

a/ Leave the player as it is and continue listening to your music.

b/ Start re-ripping your tracks to your PC( You will have to this at some stage anyway ) in your own time.

c/ You don't trust SonicStage so use your favourite ripping software ( eg WMP) and rip to your default music folder in MP3 ( my suggestion ).

d/ Have a look at the download section of this site, I think there is a tool to do a descent job of mopping up SS and then do a re-install of 4.3.

e/ Using the import tool on SS, import your music.SS only creates an index of your music files, they will remain intact in their original drive if anything goes wrong ( trust me on this)

f/ Now, format your DAP ( using SS, not Windows) and transfer.

A

I went back to 3.4 because 4.3 would not allow me to use my player with it.

I am afraid your suggestion is above my knowledge, No idea what you mean, but thanks anyway. i will have to just play the music i have on it and use any other MP3 player to play new files.. and guess what brand it wont be.

The HD5 is unique in that it is designed so that what ever way you are holding the player, wether it be sideways or upside down the display will be readable at the angle you have it when it is turned on. Hope that makes sense :)

I cant download the manual, will someone tell me how to bookmark tracks on HD NW5. I have tried but forgotten how its done
I don't have one, but I would imagine that it would be the same as my NW-HD1 - you hold the up or down button until the bookmark symbol pops up.
