All - Brand new to the board, but not new to MD.

I am in the process of writing a MBA paper in a technology and innovation management class on innovation and the MiniDisc. I have found all the resources on this site very useful.

Very high-level The rough outline is as follows;

Intro - History of MD/Paper will address static and dynamic models of innovation and how evaluates Sony's level of success relative to this.

Technology - Talk to MO technology/ATRAC/NetMD...

Innovation Models

(Static) Teece

(Dynamic) Demonstrate that MD was truly innovative (i.e. had less functionality out of the gate for more money, but caught up)

Analysis - The Xitel device likely saved Sony, and THAT innovation was important.

I will post a public link to the paper when finished, and if folks are interested, during its process. Some of the information I have gathered may be of interest to other researchers.

Please let me know your thoughts or ideas you might have.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure why you think the Xitel device saved Sony. The Japanese market saved Sony with broad and comprehensive product adoption. The US market became irrelevant to Sony for Minidisc a few years ago. That is why it is hard to find good product variety in the US. In Japan, it is hard to buy a combo stereo unit without a MD player or recorder/player in it. MD is everywhere in Japan. I have a factory installed MD player in my Lexus here in Japan. There was even a billboard advertisement for a new Panasonic MD that was plastered all over Tokyo last month. You would never see that in the US. I think the Xitel device is minor. I suggest you globalize your view for the paper you are writing.

I seem to remember the Xitel site having a story about how their product was popular because of its minidisc-ness, but the way they made it sound, it was more like MD saved them. Still, I can't find it on their site anymore, and I wouldn't trust my own memory for anything. I'm an MD owner, without any Xitel stuff, and while the thought has crossed my mind, I'd be more likely to just get a nice soundcard.

Don't worry, your memory was reliable today - I've read that article a few times.

I truly appreciate the insight. My focus here is on the innovative, specifically the disruptive technology aspects of the MiniDisc. From a classic disruptive technology standpoint, the Xitel device could be thought of as disruptive, while the Xitel at the time allowed the device to record MDs. This ability to transfer music from the PC to the MD was imitated by Sony with the NetMD technology.

The global perspective is a point well taken. The demand for the device in Japan was driven by network effects (more folks had them) and Japan market more willing to pay a premium for miniturization.

The paper is progressing. An early draft is attached for those interested. I have the Excel files used to generate the tables and graphs if anyone wants them.

Thanks again. http://www.parislynnalex.com/MD/Mini%20Dis...%20_120502_.pdf

Hi JoeBob,

Here's a little constructive criticism for your early draft--hope that you take it as constructive--that's the way I mean to offer it to you. I'm an MBA/Ed.M. working on a Ph.D. in education policy and having written and read a bunch of papers here's my quick impression--reads a bit too much like a book report--particularly with so many charts and graphs. Need to spend quite a bit more time on the analytic section. Your professor will notice any weakness there. Also, you might want to discuss the implications for MD of the recent and rapid adoption of CD burning capability into nearly all recent computers--both in terms of being a substitute good and as a complimentary good for MD. I skimmed the paper rather quickly--so if you covered these things I mentioned, please accept my apologies. Am interested in seeing the final paper.

Regards,

Taking any and all criticism; it is valued highly by me.

Debated putting it up there, as all that is in there is a framework for the information; I dont want to bog down the board with hourly postings; the next version will include the analysis of technology against academic models of innovation.

Again, greatly appreciated.

JoeBob,

Having read your paper, I feel that it is relatively strong and accurate with the exception of the topics already mentioned in this post. I did, however, notice several grammatical errors. I don't have any method for modifying pdf files, but if you'd like to send me a text format of the document, I'd gladly fix any grammatical errors or other glitches using a different color text so you can see my suggestions. If you want to take me up on that, my e-mail address is Bazirker@hotmail.com. I enjoyed reading your paper and have learned a good deal about the minidisc system from it. Good luck with getting it finished!

Oh yeah, and your executive summary rocks!
