riegal
I am buying my first MD player/recorder. My most important considerations are portability and sound quality. I was going to buy the MD-N1. However, the MD-N10 has the "ATRAC DSP Type-S" which is supposed to give superior sound quality. Does anyone have experience or opinion on the N10 that would justify the extra costs and time to buy it over the N1. Thank you.
GD|eNSo
Not having heard the MZ-N10, I cant comment on its "superior sound quality" but I do know that it has Atrac DSP Type-S, which improves the sound quality of MDLP (LP2/4). As you know, the MZ-N1 is lacking this. The MZ-N1 has Typr-R. Type-R improves the sound quality of "SP". Keep in mind, MZ-N10 already incorporates Type-R along with Type-S. The N10, also has "Virtual Headphone Technology Acoustic Engine" which uses DSP to provide "Studio, Club, Live, or Arena" effects. Another advantage the N10 has over the N1, is its netMD transfer speeds. N10 has LP4 audio downloading at 64x realtime (LP2 @32x?, SP @ ?x). Where the N1 has half of that (16/32x), and dosnt support true SP (only realtime). As for portability, The N10 "Unit is 30g lighter and 2.6mm thinner than the MZ-N1" You can get more info here: MZ-N10 MZ-N1

Leland
Regarding sound quality, the biggest limiting factor is the headphones. I think all units will sound excellent once you couple them with headphones that suit your tastes. I have used many different models (see my sig) and sound quality never seemed to vary much in my experience.
Leland
One other plus for the N10 over the N1: The user interface, the little joystick for foward/back FF/FR Vol Up/Down is incredible. I have not used a better interface on any portable unit. You can use it flawlessly every time, even in your pocket or in the dark. This is a big plus for the N10 that can only be appreciated by using it for a while. Rehearsal divide is also a great benefit that is only found on the N10.
