Can someone explain the differences between Type-R and Type-S recording? I have the N505 and am thinking about returning it while I still can (about another couple weeks) and holding out for one of the new 610's with Type-S. Is it worth waiting for the new ones and paying the difference? Also what is a weather band tuner and why would I need a tv tuner on an MD player? :?

Type-S is a newer version of ATRAC for LP modes. Most people won't be able to tell the difference in sound quality.

"weather band" is a part of VHF band (162.400 to 162.550 NHz), stations of National Weather Service (in US) broadcast on these frequencies.

So since I live in Canada the weather band tuner is useless to me? Can you explain in more detail the differences between Type-R and Type-S? Can you fit more music on an MD with Type-S?

Weather radio is also available in Canada:

No you can't fit more music on an MD with type-S. Type-S is an improved version of Type-R, just a better sound compression algorithm.

Ok, well this is from what I understand.

Type R applies ONLY to SP recordings. Type R is a better ENCODER algorithm that makes the sound quality better. However, Type R does not apply with NetMD recordings as NetMD sends SP tracks as uncompressed LP2 quality. Therefore, Type R only works if you are recoding SP without NetMD.

Type S includes Type R. Type S has the standard Type R quality for SP but it also makes LP tracks sound better. So, overall, all of your sound will sound better. Type S for LP works on the decoding side, so the source of the recoding does not matter.

Also, I am not sure what a TV tuner is doing on an MD player. I think that it just allows you to receive TV signals and hear the audio portion? Please correct me if I am wrong. Furthermore, TV signals are not commonly broadcasted in Canada. Therefore, I seriously doubt that you could pick up many TV 'channels' with the Tuner. Again, I am not 100% familiar with TV tuners so correct me if I am wrong.

Could the TV tuners just be another reason for Sony to charge more? As far as I understand, it's just a useless feature, for me at least since I live in Canada. Does anyone have any advice as to whether it is better to keep my 505 or return it and wait for the 610's to come out? I need to know soon because the number of days I have left to return it is getting smaller.

now ask yourself, how, say, MZ-N707 is a NetMD unit if it only has type-R ATRAC? according to your statement type-R doesn't apply to NetMD...

Yep. 'Me' is right. Just don't use netMD if you want a Type-R track.

And edgeman, do you understand the differences between Type-R and Type-S now? Furthermore, you need to ask yourself a few questions.

1. Do you want a radio on your md player?

2. Do you often use LP2 and LP4 and think that they need to sound better?

3. Do you think transfering a track to md (via NetMD) takes too long?

If you answered Yes to any of these questions, i would consider getting the 610. Furthermore, the N505 is a base-end model. I am sure that you would enjoy a non-base model more, as it has more 'cool' functions. I am not 100% familiar with the new 610's features. Perhaps another member can shed more light on it?

Tell us what you end up doing.

I think I'm going to wait for the 610's to come out then. But now I'm gonna' be without an MD player for about 2 months. :x I don't think LP4 is too bad, it loses a bit of the high end sound, but I managed to fit 6 CD's onto one MD yesterday and it didn't sound too bad at all, but I'm always ready for improvement!

What are faster alternatives to transferring via NetMD? I didn't think it was that slow, but then again I guess it's because I'd been using a cassette walkman as my primary portable audio device up until about 2 weeks ago 8) . I sometimes wonder if it's worth the extra cash for MD over cassette. Both have cheap media, my walkman is all metal (Panasonic Shockwave), the walkman looks way better than any MD I could afford, the walkman has track search like an MD player, and it's much cheaper. I'm not gonna' go on about cassette being better because in the end it isn't, but the price of MD players is crazy!

No, sorry. Edgeman, you must've mis-understood my 3rd question. I *think* that the new line that sony is releasing in North America has the same transfer speed as the N10. Up to 64x in LP4. Sooo, NetMD *should* be faster on the 610 than on the N505. And yes, I personally don't like OpenMG, but there are other programs available to transfer songs. Sonic Stage or, even better, the Nero Trick.

And yes, I would have to agree, MD players are OVERPRICED. I don't know if it costs that much to make, or sony is trying to make a profit. I think thats why it didn't 'take off' in the US market. Furthermore, MDs are overpriced in North America. There is a 'tax' on blank media so that it can be used to 'protect recording artists"? I'm not sure what the money is used for, but I know that we're being overcharged.

Is the statement made by Pengin that type S is a DECODER improvement accurate? Where did that informaiton come from? That would be a big departure from the original concept of a frozen decoder and continually improving encoder to allow upgraded recording quality with backward compatible playback capability.

Whoops. Tmeg is right. N10 is the only recorder with 64x transfer. I misread the Sony Press Release.

Also, Type S includes a the "new" type-R SP encoder and a NEW lp DECODER. I am 100% sure on that. I am not aware of the original concept of a frozen decoder that LeLand is refering too.

The newest models (wow I had not expect THAT many new units in such a short time frame) e.g. the Sony MZ-N910 is stated to have 64x transfer biggrin.gif Now I wait for an update of the higher end MD decks 8)

The N1 seems to be fine for me for a while.

Hm, does anyone know if the N910 will be released in USA? Personally, I don't like it.

Pros:

DSP Type-S

64x NetMD

Cons:

It is the same machine as R909, except for the Type S and NetMD

...

There has been some speculation that the E in NE910 and such means North American release model. I don't know if that works out? But the F in NF810 means FM for FM/AM/TV/Weather Radio Tuner.

...

What I think is quite intersting it the *first* Sony Player that has DSP Type-S

MZ-E510

Seems to me that it wouldn't make much sense to have a developing encoder and frozen decoder; I mean, if you do live recording on an N10 with Type-S, you won't hear the added detail if you play it back on a Sharp MT880 for instance, right?

Winamp MP3 decoder doesn't change much, but LAME encoder keep being ameliored tongue.gif

No.  My N10 is killer.  There has never been a unit to compare.  Some say the backside looks weird.  I never see that side.

I have to admit...the N10 graphite  is the sexiest portable unit I've ever seen, with the black/red N707 second. The MT880 has that bulge, but the press pics give you all the wrong camera angles...it's soo unappreciated - hold it in your hands and you fall in love with it smile.gif
