Guest Anonymous
Hi all, Today I hooked up my MZ-N10 to my computer after a couple of weeks. I put it into the cradle and realised that the "PC>>MD" sign did not light up, yet the track number and other information was displayed on the unit. So my computer didn't detect the recorder which was connected to the computer. However, unlike the others who have had a detection problem with their MZ-N10s, I didn't recieve the "PC>>MD" sign when the unit was out of the cradle either - so I'm hoping there's still hope and I don't have to take this to get repaired. Okay, now it gets even more interesting! If I leave it in the cradle but remove the power cable connected to the cradle, the "PC>>MD" sign lights up and my computer detects it as connected, but SonicStage gives me an error if I try to transfer songs, however I am able to see the contents of the disc and edit the track names/orders without a problem. So, to summarise, I only get the "PC>>MD" light when the power cable is unplugged but even then I can't transfer music (although I'm able to do other functions such as changing track orders). I've checked all connections and have done a clean re-installation of the software + driver but to no avail. I'm using Windows XP w/ Service Pack 1a and the NTFS file system (I was able to transfer music a couple of weeks ago using this setup though). Anybody know the solution? dazzjazz
Might be a stupid question but do you have the right driver for the N10 ? Also, did you install the driver BEFORE SonicStage ? HTH Darren
Guest Anonymous
Hey Dazza, Yup, I used the installation CD that came with the N10, so the driver is the correct one.. When I clean re-installed the software + driver I just used the option on the CD that automatically installs SonicStage and the driver, so I'm not quite sure what order it was installed in. However, before this problem I had installed it the same way. I also tried using RealOne Player today, but it failed too. Anything else I should try? Thanks, Dhruv - Melb, Aus
mAjEsTiC
have you tried to transfer to a new blank MD to see if that works??? or u'v already tried it 2 no avail as well???
Guest Anonymous
Yup, I have tried using other media, but the problem remains. Thanks though.. I reckon I'll just contact Sony and see if they can do anything about it. I'll get back with my progress. - Dhruv
RichM
I had this exact problem, and I'm afraid the only solution (that I'm aware of) is to get it repaired from whereever you purchased it. My N10 needed a new main board I suspect yours may need the same. It took six weeks to come back - how I missed it. It has nothing to do with software since the N10 should display the PC>>MD when connected to any USB port that's powered even when there is no driver available including the ports on the Playstation 2. BerkY
Or you could just purchase an N910...
Guest Anonymous
is the 910 better then???
BerkY
Well, err, they have exactly the same features but the N910 has a better battery life due to a gumstick 1350mAH battery. Which I reckon is better, cos i dont like recharging every 3 days, if you know what i mean. Oh and it doesnt have a connection problem like the N10 either. It seems more problem-free than the N10. Christopher
I posted this in another topic, but it's still somewhat relevant. The N10 does not have numerous problems with PC-related issues. Most likely whatever issue Berky read about was isolated and due to faulty software installation. I have not heard of any consistant N10 hardware-related issues. The internal battery is no different than any other HD-type device [i.e. iPod] and is susceptible to failure after long-term use. I believe Sony has flexible pricing options available for replacement [and I think you can even do it yourself], but if you want to avoid that just get the 910. Try completely uninstalling the software and reinstalling it. If that doesn't work, I can provide you links to alternate programs that you can use for download to your MD. BerkY
Well as i also pointed out in another post the, that specific problem about the N10 not being detected by the computer has been a re-occuring problem as I have seen many ppl post about it in forums. So yea there you go... And I havent seen any problems regarding the N910. Also the N910 was released later which means it might be that sony engineers have learnt from the N10 erradic behaviour of not being detecting and might have found a solution as it does not occuer with N910. Cheers BerkY
mAjEsTiC
i haven't had a problem with my N10 unit yet and i've had it for nearly a year...so i don't know...maybe it came from a good batch or something but i agree that there are quite a few problem regarding this unit that other members have expressed through several threads... Christopher
Yes, but we must also consider how many units were produced and how many of these isolated incidents exist. Who knows, and it's not as if all products that are released by anyone are guarenteed to work fully. Everything has it's faults. Everyone should kiss majestic's feet for babysitting this forum, by the way. Just a thought.
BerkY
Hey kurisu dont you have more homework to do hehe j/k mate take it easy cheers BerkY PS: Well the N10 has problems and the N910 doesnt... At least not as much as the N10, so ppl should buy the N910. This is just good advice, dont ya think?

larry
I have the same problem as originally reported in this thread: 1) Last week, everything (MZ-N10) worked fine. 2) This week, cannot get the PC to recognize that a device has been attached when the AC cord is plugged into the cradle. 3) Cannot get the PC to recognize that the device has been attached unless the remote is also plugged in (?!) 4) Cannot transfer music (either direction) from SonicStage (upgraded to SonicStage 2.0) 5) SonicStage DOES allow me to edit names, delete music, create and name folders, etc. 6) It converts music to ATRAC3 fine, but fails on the transfer with a "Cannot write to device/media" error message. Sony tech serv no help. "Try a different USB cable", they say. "Try reverting your XP to last week's version" they say. Have you successfully worked this problem or should I send it in (still under warrenty!) TIA!
