I am trying to decide whether to buy a MD - they certainly intrique me. I would be buying really just for listening to music, when travelling and away from home.

As I understand it from reading all the various websites I can find the software that comes with players only works with the PC platform - I own MACs. Is this correct?

If the above is true - is there software available for the MAC? I think I saw a reference somewhere to something for MAC but can't find it now.

I have a large collection of music on hard drive - about 6,000 tracks, some of which are full albums because separating Pink Floyd or something like made no sense. I seem to understand that the compression (2X) may only be possible from the PC platform using Sony's software - is this true?

I often use Toast Titanium and wonder whther this copuld be used to record to the MD but am not clear on whether the MD can be hooked up to USB directly or does it hook up to the mini plug and record directly while playing a playlist?

I admit to being a bit confused. At the moment I simply have 3 256 MB SD cards which I can plug into my Palm Tungsten and use that when travelling but it burns the battery quickly so recharges are important.

Any help would be appreciated.

well yes that's true kinda, there hasn't been much Mac support from Sony or any of the other companies in regards to NetMD units so you'd be hard pressed finding a fully functional program that will mimic the functionality of SonicStage.OpenMG/SimpleBurner/BeatJam on the Mac (not that you'd really want to since they're pretty buggy) but otherwise there is one user made program for the mac that allows mac users to transfer through a program called xmd...i'm not entirely sure ware to get it since i don't own a mac (...yet...)...

it can actually have a maximum of 4x compression (LP4 quality) but it's really really bad and most ppl just don't bother with this mode and stick with LP2 quality (2x compression)...

i don't think so...since the MD hooks up via the USB cable directly and needs drivers for it to get recognised by windows...but you can hook it up to a miniplug and record either through digital or analogue cables but this will be done in real-time and not any faster...

i know what you mean...i own the Tungsten T3 and i shove a 512MB SD in there...but i've given up in trying to use it as a music player since i need the battery on the unit for me to be able to do more important things than listen 2 music...i usually use MD to do this...it's well worth the cost IMO...

I have not gone T3 specifically due to the battery life issue - maybe the next version will be better.

I was afraid that you would say that recording was real time - oh well, so be it. I have a PC downstairs - the kids - I guess in the worst case I could transfer the song files over the network and USB load from there - that's not a killer.

I will take a closer look at the MD's I think, I have been looking at the Sony MZN510CKS ( no idea what all that means!).

Maybe after Christmas when the sales are on ....

Thanks Agian Majestic, I'll keep lurking and reading,

JIM

The MZ-N510 is an entry-level NetMD Recorder. A NetMD Recorder is basically both a "downloader" (ie from the PC, not MAC) and a recorder (ie with the supplied optical cable). You wont be able to record live without a powered mic. So you will have spend a decent amount on a powered microphone is recording live is really important for you. The N510 in the US also comes with a car kit but i am not sure about that. So you can even listen to it in your car... Funky eh smile.gif

Well hope you made up your mind about... smile.gif
