hI EVERYONE.

i have a n505, and i have this problem:

when i record songs to mi Md from my pc, the only thing that i get is silence, and when i open the unit, and insert the disk again, i get the "blank" message. (this same thing happen qwith the line in recording).

i thought that it was a software problem, and i did all the things to unistall it, and i tried again...and it didnt work...

so looking for in another post, i found this: SOME MODELS OF THE MD UNITS HAVE A PROBLEM WITH THE RIBBON THAT CONECCTS THE RECORDING HEAD (is not the same that the optical lens that is unter the disc)..

so, i openned my unit, and guess what: the ribbon was broken...

SO..THIS IS THE PROBLEM WITH ALL THE N505 MD RECORDING PROBLEM (AND OTHERS MODELS TOO)...AND THE ONLY SOLUTION (AT THIS POINT) IS TO TAKE THE UNIT TO SONY TO FIX IT.

Any questions? : dariodravez@hotmail.com

<Kosmos> : sorry i'm not sure how much it'll cost because my unit was still under warranty when i took it back...

<minimi> : that era that i was refering to was the 1st gen models that utilised NetMD...i.e. N505, N707, N1 and S1...there were quite a few problems related to the motor failing due to a dodgy ribbon cable...but they've seem to have fixed it up in the next series of NetMD's to come out (current series such as NE410, N510, NF610, N710, N910, N10) so no i don't think ur NF610 is plagued by this problem...

beyond what it costs where can i find it..i've been looking for it for some time...n as for which units r plagued with the problem..most of them really...but i'd say it started to happen with the MDLP units don't know y them..but my opinion is that's cuz the magnetic head got further to reach than b4 ...not only the ribon cable but i'm interested in getting the lens cuz i got 2 units here that i wanna repair..

Hi Majestic,

I have an mz-n910 and have recently noticed the symptoms you describe: no recorded data after removing and re-inserting disc, regardless of recording input (optical, Sonic Stage, line in).

Do you (or does anyone) have a photo of the broken ribbon?

After searching the forum for "blank disc" another thread suggests there could be a problem with the recording head.

Does anyone have any more ideas about the problem and how to fix it? My MD is 5 years old.

i had the very first gens of the N707 and never experienced the ribbon malfunction...still dont understand how the ribbon can become disconnected.

The N910 appears to a prime candidate for this fault, I have one with this fault, though it has had quite a bit of use as a recorder (you can tell from reading data from the EEPROM roughly how much use it has had). My faulty unit has incremented the EEPROM recording register to 34C(hex) which is 844 (decimal). 844 "what" I am not sure, maybe minutes(?)

If I were to guess at the mechanism of the fault, I would suggest that it is a combination of the "flexing" of the ribbon cable as the write head goes back and forth, and the current in the conductors which are connected to the write head.

A "fatigue" point on the cable conductor and a reasonable amount of current going through that same conductor might produce a small "hot-spot" which may be enough to eventually cause the fracture of the cable at that point.

A microscope photograph of a severed conductor may show whether or not this theory is plausible.

Spotted instructions on how to bypass a broken ribbon elsewhere on the site:

If I do give it a go it will be the second Sony device I've opened up in a month after my PS2 started growling and stopped reading discs (thankfully now fixed).

Despite (or maybe because of?) my MD's age, I'm reluctant to be rid of it. It seems as if it has only been in the last year or so, since I discovered this forum, that I've really started to get the best out of it (new versions of Sonic Stage, new gumstick battery, better headphones, more time at the gym and on public transport...).

I think if I do get another personal music player it will be a flash device, fewer moving parts!

Does anyone have an application that can convert ATRAC files into .mp3 or similar?

Thanks for your comments and tips.
