A couple people from MinidiscT board are saying Minidisco has gotten word that Sony is delaying the release for early June.

Major bummage. I was hoping to have my unit before I head to Hawaii on the 17th of May. I recently got my NetMD and was hoping to consolidate the 10-12 MDs I have recorded into 4-6 HiMDs before I left. Oh well.

Freaking Sony.

Ok. I talked to David Karon of Minidisco tonight - nice guy! Anyway, he informed me that they are forecasting that Hi-MD will indeed not arrive until mid or late June. Whilst this isn't the offical word, I honestly believe it just the same as calling Sony. He informed me that there's a manufacturing issue with the actual discs and they're working on it. We'll see what unfolds..

maybe there's a driver issue, and you would now have to carry a mini-cd with the hi-md driver on it (defeats the purpose) thats my guess.

it doesn't matter to me anyway anymore, cause i got a sj33 clie to carry me over until the 2nd generation hi-md (so they can fix the bugs)

i'm not sure why sony would delay the release of the units themselves just because the media is not ready yet. you can still use regular md discs at higher capacity. this just hoses those of us who need some kind of recorder NOW, but have to wait. i may end up having to buy an iriver or something like that instead just because of the timing. if they would release the units first and then the media later it would solve the problem for people who currently do not have an md recorder. not like i think a company like sony should cater to some dork in colorado, but i guess i needed to vent and my wife just doesn't understand...thanks for indulging me!

Well, if the major feature is to record on a 1GB disc and the disc is not available, that would be a good reason to delay the release. My first MD player only had 60 min blanks, with 74 min blanks promised for the future. I waited several months and finally they came out and could be found if you looked around a lot for a mere US$ 25 per disc in Tokyo.

I'd be more likely to buy an Ipod rather than wait, except for:

1. larger size for ipod

2. questionable battery life with no extra battery

3. new ipods promised in the fall

4. have to re-rip 400 or so CD's

5. cannot record

I guess if I've waited this long I can handle waiting till June. Disappointing but time goes by quickly these days (where did April go?).

I had the same thought regarding releasing the units now and 1GB media later, but that would create a problem, I think. Everyone who has MD listed on their site for pre-order or even just as a "coming soon" item has probably listed that one of the accessories included with the units is a 1 GB disc. It's typical for Sony to include a blank for recording on to get people started, and it would be ghetto if they included a blank anything less than 1GB. So to avoid problems with customers I think they'd rather delay Hi-MD than send out units without media. Like Leland said, the 1GB media is one of the major features of this unit (one that makes it more competitive with other popular MP3 players like the mini ipod)-- it would be pretty confusing if the media wasn't available when the units were, and wouldn't make Sony look good.

Hey Leland, being in Tokyo, have you heard anything about the Japan release of Hi-MD? I mean, assuming media is ready by June, can you think of any reason why the forecasted June release of Hi-MD in Japan would be delayed? If not, my options for my first Hi-MD unit just increased a great deal, heh.

Has anyone found out anything from anyone other than Minidisco.com? I understand they are reputable, but no one's seen anything official from Sony yet... someone could be pulling some chains...

I'm going to shoot an email to a friend I have that works for Sony Storage and see if he can find out anything... I'll poast if I hear something from him, good or bad...

Larry: Here's a summary of a discussion I had with our webmaster/owner of minidisc.org last night:

Well, I got off the phone with the Editor/owner of Minidisc.org and he had the chance to sample a nice NH900. When he told me that, I thought to myself "Nooo...why not me."

He described that the unit and the functionality within was very nice, but he didn't really come off that impressed - or at least as I had expected him to be. He didn't think the remote should've come with the unit, and we both agreed that the remote that comes with the NH1 will be a sought-after accessory. I also recall a blip about the jog dial on the NH900 being a little stiff, but I wonder if that's due to the unit not being the final version or it not being broken in. "Nothing like the iPod."

They were a bit confused as to why they couldn't transfer data across and burn uploaded tracks, and that's because they had a inferior version of Sonicstage 2. I told him about Andrew's [aka iceeedtea] build and he may have the opportunity to use the NH900 with that. [nice]

He reports uploading/downloading was nice and we seemed to agree that Hi-MD will be a fantastic change for Minidisc. He did confirm with me that there is no doubt that Hi-MD will arrive in June.

He also said the new Hi-MD disc is pretty keen, and the NH900 seems comprable to a MZ-R900 in weight and nearly in size.

I can't wait!
