NetMD vs Hi-MD

Well with this extended delay of the "good" hi-md units I've been doing some research. Everyone is giving big kudos to the N10 model and how they prefer it over the hi-md 600 model.

Anyways I was curious about some comparisons of the two, if I were to pick up an n10 could I download sonicstage 2 and just use the hi-md backwards compatability to get more play?

Remember that the new HiMDs are backwards compatible with NetMD/MDLP. For about the same price you'd pay for the N10 (say, $250-$300, probably cheaper but go with me here), you can get the NH900, which will come equipped with HD-Digital Amp--that itself should be more than enough to justify the purchase of those units if the ancedotal evidence are true.

HD-Digital Amp

What is this? Is it speakers to play your Hi-MD out of?

And when is the Hi-MD coming out in America?

an HD amp is a high definition amp inside the HI-MD player, to increase the fidelity of the sound. and no, theres no speakers. its all through the earphones.

Nope, and honestly, whilst the N10 does have impressive astethics, I would not choose it because I know that I could get much better sound out of a lesser-priced unit.

So I can't get SonicStage 2.0 without buying a n600? If so how can I use hi-md discs with netmd units? Also since you believe there is better if you negate astethics then what are they and why? Personally how it looks isn't a major concern just that it's not terribly clunky and won't suck battery life out.

Glad you asked actually. Hmm...

Well they ability to record is not very important to me as I do not work within the music biz nor do I play any instruments. Though the idea of being able to record lectures is interesting.

A big thing for me is battery life as I hate spending a lot on AAs or having a rechargable die out in 6-8hrs(like an ipod).

The more I hear about the tuner the less I like it so I'll stick to my car radio and alarm clock for those needs.

I have no clue wha to make of a digital amp as I'm not sure if any of my cd players or walkmans ever sported one. If not I've been satisfied with their sound quality and am just a simple, casual music enthusiast. Although to note I like to be able to hear my music and some of sony's gear is notorious for having shite volume controls.

The amount of music is not a huge deal since even with himd formatted minidisc I can get 5-6hrs of good enough quality music. Having 3 or 4 discs that I can just rewrite is more than enough for me.

If Sonicstage 2.0 is easily acquired and usable for the netmd I doubt that's much of a factor.

Appearance isn't a huge factor for me so much as portability. The n10 was appealing because of how sleek it is, I like the idea of being able to easily slip my media device in my pocket.

Most of my music will be downloaded(legal in Canada yay) so cutting down on the ridiculous and annoying steps needed to get said mp3s to my device would be grand.

Pricing is very debatable upon the quality of the unit I get. So far there has been little to convince me that I need the spend a lot of extra cash on hi-md when I don't need most of it's bells and whistles and the ability to format minidiscs makes the decision even easier. Why not just get a nice high-end netmd used for half the price?

I'm liking the look of the two units you sport in your tag, the Kenwood and Sharp models. Both look sleek and have nice battery life, digital amps. Just curiousity would either of these have mic-in? Will they support formated minidiscs?

The Sharp and Kenwood are player-only units [], and no MD-only unit can read a formatted disc. A MD disc formatted to a Hi-MD disc is only compatible with Hi-MD units.

You've given me a good idea of what units would be good for you, but seemingly forgotten to leave a price range. How much total can you spend, friend?

Wow apparently I'm clueless, that sucks about not being able to use formatted md's on md players. Those two units look very sweet but there is no way I will be buying two units so I can use them.

As far as price let's say 300-400 usd is around my limit but I would more than appreciate an array of suggestions.

Damn, if you're going to spend that much, forget your negative ideals about Hi-MD and get a $300 NH900. I doubt you'd regret that at all, honestly. Discs are pretty fair and the number you buy would only put you in the middle of your projected budget.

If you really had to go MD-only, I guess you'd be good with pretty much any of the recorders mentioned in my digital amp thread..

i.e. Sharp DR80, or anything with a digital amp. I honestly view non-digital amp'd units as outdated and not really the new standard of portable audio like ones with such. I haven't met an iPod user or heard one that wasn't blown away by the Sharp digital amp sound. Same goes for Sony and Kenwood newer-generation digital amp units.

No Sony recorder has a digital amp, except the NH900 and the NH1. Kenwood recorders? The only one is the DMC-S9NET, and that's a Sharp clone. Sharp NetMD units with a digital amp? IM-DR80, and IM-DR420 [i don't think the 420 looks are up you're alley, though]. I think with you serenity lies within the NH900. Not just you, either..with alot of people.

*sigh* guess you're right though I must say your sharp player looks very sexy and the kenwood's ability to play for 130+ hours is bloody astounding. That is the one drawback of the hi-md line I'll only get about 22 hours of battery life out of em.

Also I hate the idea of having to wait 2 more friggin months sad.gif.

Indeed, that wait is killing me too.

& I can't believe it. The thread is asking us to choose MD vs HiMD.

MD is dead.

HiMD is here to stay.

Kind of like the new/old testament in the bible.

WOW.....hold it...

dude don't say that bout the Bible..man...that statement could get u into trouble... altho pretty soon normal MD might become absolete.. but MDLP n NET MDs still gonna b around a lil more.. i'm sure ppl gonna buy them as gifts for relatives n what not... ..the only competing thing with MDs r the price...they're all round the same price region..u know...an R900 costs almost the same as the N1 n they're almost completely different..but we'll c bout that in the future with HI MD being usable as media storage device

crazy's right ... NetMD/MDLP will be around for a while. Sony was wise to allow people the ability to continue downloading and recording in the std-MD modes on the recorders (using std-MD media) alongside the new Hi-MD stuff. Gives people the chance to start using the new equipment with old media.

It's almost equatable to CD's and DVD's... since they are readable in a DVD drive, but not the other way around. Of course the analogy is lost after Hi-MD gives a higher capacity to the original media, but I digress. smile.gif
