most likely i'll return it wen the 800 comes out tongue.gif. just to carry me over and keep me busy tongue.gif

... voted, but I'm not in Canada. I picked up a 600 on Monday evening, after I got back from my vacation. I really could have used it BEFORE my vacation, but dangit if Sony didn't delay it.

For what I use it for, it's a good unit. I bring it to work, and plug it into the line in on one of my computers so I can listen to some music. I have also archived some pictures on some 80min blanks.

I may sell it off in a couple months for a 900, as I would like the ability to record via mic, and the stand will be a nice thing to have, too.

Before i start, i would like to say im sorry to those (about 12 people) who came into the sony store before me and asked for the hi-md, but couldn't get it because I RESERVED IT, YEA BABY, I PUT SOME CASH DOWN TO MAKE IT SO I HAVE IT BEFORE YOU! HOOOAAA! only 2 ppl actually reserved it. me and some other smart person

anyways..., in explorer, a 10 mb mp3 (american pie) was clocked at about 13.5 seconds. i was a little disheartened, until i fired up sonicstage. im currently using a 2.8 ghz P4 HT with 768 ram, 200 gb HD space, with sonicstage given highest priority, AND THE PREVIOUS SONG IS TRANSFERED BEFORE THE NEXT SONG IS HALF DONE!!!! with my old md (510) the conversions finish WAY before the transfer is finished. Its as if my computer is too slow for it!

before: (std)

conversion: 7 seconds

transfer: 12 secocds

new (hi-md)

conversion: 7 seconds

transfer: 3 SECONDS

so, as you can see, there is a significant jump is transfer speed. Deletes SUPER fast as well. The sound quality is about the same as an 510, if not better, because of the 5 band eq. a lil slow on the startup.

but one major negative i found with this is the rotating dial. it feels dry, and is a bit awkward and hard to use. Also, as soon as i got home and pulled it out of my coat pocket (i opened it up in the store, all the employees gathered around and we used for a while until the computer came back online), there we some scratches on the LCD display ALREADY. i hope it doesn't get worse. but i should give the lcd display a good coating of plastic film for good measure smile.gif. when purchasing electroncs, i always keep a watch out for openings for dust, and tall buttons. the 600 is really bad for both. i can see inside between the middle dial button, and the dial area is shaped like a bowl from god. (holy bowl, get it? tongue.gif). so im thinking that cleaning that area will be a must.

i think it took longer for canada because they had to test it out and relabel the thing.

when playing back , the sound quality is exacly the same. its as if its recorded different to enable digital playback. when your transfering files via sonicstage, it really doesn't like it if you press the stop button in SS2. it doesn't crash or anything, butit takes the hi-md about 15-20 seconds to get orientated again. btw, im never going to use that download button. SS2 all they way tongue.gif.

you can go through the menus while the minidisc slowly (takes 10 seconds) loads the dissc, which is nice. finally, multitasking minidisc CPUs!

works fine with my rm mc11el, all functions are intact, except for the sound button. instead of switching sound1->sound2->off, it just goes sound1(or 2, whichever you had it set to)->off.

when you pause on the hi-md, it fades out, (about a 33ms fade), I've kinda wanted this. i bet sony got it off of winamp 5 tongue.gif.

p.s. hey, this poll is for canadians, but sure! we'll take in any americans!

Well that is good news. I could use the one off my old EJ955 CD player!

Sweet.

Well, I can only give a mini-review, as my foray into Minidisc is pretty recent. I have a NetMD unit that I got a couple months ago, and I can't even remember the model number. I went ahead and purchased the NH600D, as I thought for now, it will work for what I usually use it for. I bring the unit to work with me, and plug it in via the line in on my second computer here, and listen to music when it's slow. I usually get maybe a couple or three hours of total listening time in a day, with frequent stopping and starting of the player.

I just got back from my vacation to Hawaii, for which I was hoping to have a HiMD unit... and ended up buying my NH600 the night I got back home. Kinda a bummer, Sony! If it were out on time, I'd have had it on the plane!

All in all, I think the NH600 is a good player. A slightly lower price would probably fit it better, tho, but I do not regret the price.

Likes/pros:

Higher capacity. I have 8 CDs worth of music recorded in HiSP on the one HiMD disc that came with it, and I have a little room left. I might even be able to get a 9th CD on it!

Data- for me, it will be a good backup device. I have already used three standard 80min disks to archive some digital photos I have on my server at home.

Play options. I like the way the menus and controls are laid out on the unit. It's easy to navigate, although the jog dial is a bit difficult to use because it's a bit stiff.

Sound. This unit sounds pretty good. It seems the output volume is a little higher than my NetMD unit, as when I plug it into my computer here at work, I can set the volume at 17/30 instead of 20-22/30, and the volume is fine. I also like the 6 band EQ. Definitely makes the sound stage more controllable than most MP3 players.

Quick play. I have to stop play often at work, and it's nice to be able to hit play, and instantly get playback. It does reduce battery life, but that's fine with me.

Dislikes/ cons:

Data transfer is SLOW

Have to re-rip everything (but I don't mind much, I want good quality, and my collection is pretty small)

Battery life. My NetMD unit would last for a couple weeks on one battery, but the NH600 has almost drained one battery in 2 days. It's an acceptable sacrifice for the capacity and quality, tho. Plus I have 4 rechargable AAs that I cycle through.

No AC input to charge. With this thing going through batteries quicker than my NetMD, being able to plug it in and let it charge when I get home would be nice.

I like the NH600 so far, but will probably upgrade to the NH900 in a few months. The cradle, mic in and HD amp will be nice to have!
